My brother has asked me to copy a music DVD onto a CD. I’ve avoided my brother all week, because I’m not sure if it is right or wrong to do. My Brother said he just wants to listen to the music off the DVD in his car, and he can’t play a DVD on the car stereo. Would it be wrong to copy the music DVD onto a CD?

I don’t think it would be. If you bought it you can make an extra copy. If you want to mass produce it and sell it then there would be a problem. I think it would not be breaking the copy-write law, which seems to be a reasonable benchmark.

I also don’t think it’s a problem to make a copy for backup, or to use the copy and store the original. At once time I think it was OK to make a cassette tape of a CD for use in the car, when cars had tape players. I might be totally wrong.

I can’t give legal advice, but I certainly don’t think making the CD is a moral problem here, as long as two copies aren’t playing at the same time.

Even then, oh never mind…

lol! i love the title of the thread! 😃

I burn cd’s a lot, (mainly for educational purposes which is ok by the law) not to sell though.

Is there an audio version of this DVD for sale? If so, I’d suggest buying that. I do know that it’s theft to burn copies of cd’s from friends, internet, etc instead of buying them. but your case is unique. I’d say the best policy is honesty. Since no one on this board can give you a solid answer, just tell your brother that you’d love to help him, but you can’t do it right now, because you’re not sure it’s right.

Peace of Christ be with you,

is the original CD copyrighted? then it is both a violation of the law and of the 7th commandment to copy it. If it was recorded at a concert, was it recorded legally? The terms of recording concerts are usually spelled out on your ticket or the program, and it is almost always illegal to record it. If it was a concert CD sold by the group or the promoter, then it is copyrighted and it is illegal and immoral to make a copy.

I can make copies of materials I own for my own use. I cannot legally make copies of materials and then give those materials to another person. The amount of copies doesn’t matter. That the copies aren’t sold doesn’t matter. Piracy is piracy, whether done for profit or as a favor.
