Hi,

I picked up my Doorway to Faith booklet at Mass this morning & I am truly taken by the picture on page 8 of Jesus, surrounded by cherubs whilst holding a St George’s cross. Can anyone tell me the name of this picture & who painted it?

Also is there a reason why there are lots of icons/images of Christ holding the St George’s cross?

Thanks & God Bless

Stuart

i think the red in the cross is of the sacrifice Jesus did for us.the blood red is on the cross.

it is for Christ,that saints
(ST George) do what they do.following him…

just a educated guess,if im wrong then some body will point it out for you…

im from the U K aswell, all the very best, and a happy ST Patrick’s day to you and yours.

This is a long shot as our parish (Rugby, Warwickshire) has not distributed these yet… however, it wouldn’t happen to be this image, would it?

If so, it was painted by Girolamo da Santacroce.

With regard to the flag, although very similar to a St. George Cross it’s not (usually) intended as such. The risen Christ is often portrayed with a banner or standard with a cross on it, but they’re rendered in various colours, depending on the aesthetic tastes of the artist. That said, red on white is a very popular choice.

Hehe, I would’ve been quite stunned if it was. I’ll have to wait until I get hold of a copy myself! 😃

I finally got a copy!

The painting is a detail from The Resurrection by Andrea Mantegna. The full image can be seen here.
