I went to confession yesterday and while examining my conscience beforehand I decided to also add a sin that took place before the confession I had the time before. Before my previous confession I had thought about mentioning it, but had come to the conclusion that it was only venial and decided not to bring it up (stupid, I know, I usually confess venial sins but I was coming back to the Church after 1,5 years and was determined not to fall into scrupulosity again).

Anyway, I found that it was still plaguing my conscience and so I confessed it yesterday. I did not however, say that this took place earlier. It just didn’t occur to me at the time. When I was home, I began to think that perhaps I should have done so and I’m now also questioning my judgment on whether the sin was mortal or not. What if it was mortal and I have misjudged it?

Where do I stand now? Can I receive communion and do I need to explain the whole thing yet again next confession or is everything settled now?

Xandria,
I was told by priest that if I intend to confess a sin and make mistake or forget it entirely in the confessional it is forgiven and that includes all past sins for all time before that confession. I recommend that you find a good book on confession so you will feel more confident in your confession. Whenever I start thinking over old sins and worrying about them I just trust in the mercy of Our Lord. Put yourself in his hands he wants you to be forgiven. He is merciful and forgets our sins once confessed.
Isaiah 1:18
Come now, let us set things right,*
says the LORD:
Though your sins be like scarlet,
they may become white as snow;
Though they be red like crimson,
they may become white as wool.
I’ll pray for you ****

Being sincere in Confession is like being sincere when taking a shower: you scrub where you know you might be dirty. Even if you forget some spots, the cleansing water and soap will make your soul cleaner than before. Rejoice in your purity! (Albeit, for a short time only since our concupiscence gets us dirty quickly, like a 3-year old playing out in the rain.)

If you’re still struggling with scrupulosity, you may want to find a good spiritual director.

God bless you,

You’re worrying to much for nothing. If you didn’t know that you were committing a mortal sin or not than you didn’t commit a mortal sin. One has to know that they are committing a mortal sin in order to commit one. If the priest gave you absolution then you’re fine. Enjoy Gods awesome mercy.

We can all look back on our lives and wonder if we confessed this or that or if we were saying it right etc. but please don’t let that worry you. I once asked a very holy priest about that and he said, God knows your sorrow and the very fact that you were here (in the confessional) shows that. When I absolve you that means all sins. Trust in the MERCY of God and go in peace. At the end of every confession I say, “I’m sorry for these and all the sins of my past”. God Bless. Memaw
