I hope you guys can help me with this one. I have been Catholic since I was eight years old and have always loved the Church, but recently, with all the talk of the “scandal” in the Church, it makes it very difficult. The Catholic Church has been responsible for some horrible things in the past. Today I was in the library and saw a book titled “The secret life of Pope Pius XI and Hitler.”
The Church is often referred to as The Whore of Babylon and if you read Revelations it sure seems that way, but the Church teaches us that it can’t be. At times I wonder.
How have you found peace within the Catholic Church knowing it’s past and it’s present?

Lol have you ever read the Old Testament? Seems like to me lots of times God’s people were messing things up time and time again… Fast fowerd to today. Not much has changed. Dont get discuraged. Keep your eyes on Christ and stay with his Church you will be ok. 👍

There’s nothing wrong with questioning…however make sure you are using accurate sources, not those put out by anti-Catholics.

Here’s a good site to learn the truth about Hitler and the pope:

piusxiipope.info/

It’s a good thing to learn what your faith is really about, that way you can’t be mislead by those things that appear to be true (like Catholic Church is the whore in the Bible etc). Here’s a link about the ‘whore’ issue:

catholic.com/library/whore_of_babylon.asp

Christ forgave Peter after he denied Him 3 times and made him the first pope.

Read the Old Testament…those Isrealites were pretty bad! Yet God made covenants with them!

Find some good Catholic history books. Pius XII, by his own efforts, saved almost 100,000 Jews during WWII.
The Church has been called the Whore of Babylon probably since the Book of Revelation was written. Read Scott Hahn, Tim Staples and other orthodox theologians and apologists for information on that. It’s just silly mis-reading and mis-application of Revelation by anti-Catholics (and there are a lot of those.)
Hang in, read GOOD Catholic material, study apologetics and pray, pray, pray.

Illigitimi non carborundum.

Have a look at the prophecies of Saint Jon Bosco, it might shed some light on the present day. geocities.com/Athens/5223/dbosco.html

The Lord didn’t promise us that His Church wouldn’t sway, she is, after all, made up of us men – imperfect souls. He did, however, promised that she will never fall, “and the gates of Hades shall never prevail against it” and that, my friend, is a pretty assuring promise! 👍

Do not confuse catholicism and her teachings with it’s members…

The evil done by catholics at any time in it’s history has alays been agains catholic teachings, this goes for the sedevacantist thread where the mis-aplication of Vatican II is seen as being the actual teaching of Vatican II.

Hey, buddy - DON’T get discouraged!
As far as the ridiculous allegations about Hitler and the church, SV was right on to point you to the direction of piusxiipope.info/.
Historically, the Church has flourished after times of great scandal (Arian Heresy/Council of Nicaea, Reformation/Counter-Reformation).
Besides, most Evangelical circles no longer refer to the Catholic Church as the Whore of Babylon. Same goes for Pre-Trib Rapture theology. If you want to talk about unstable and ever-changing doctrines, try one of the thousands of Protestant denominations.
On second though . . . don’t. With the Catholic Church, you’re right at home with the Lord.
For any other burning questions, try www.catholic.com.

Look to the lives of the cannonized Saints, they are our role models in imitation of Christ.

You may obtain accurate facts regarding the history of Pope Pius XI and Pius XII and other topics from the

I have been lured by some serious anti-Catholic stuff in the past, but as I got into serious study and consideration of the truth, I have found that the Catholic Church is the home of Christianity.

One way that I have looked at it is that many troubles in the Church is the devil trying to bring it down. It has been going on ever since the ascension.

Have there been bad people in the Church? Yes. Does this mean that the Church is wrong? No. Look at any other church and you will find good and evil. What you want to look for is the fullness of the TRUTH.

The simple fact that the Church has survived through 2000 years makes a strong argument. Jesus is the head and the Church is his body. Jesus promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against it, he did not promise that the devil would not attack it.

Keep the faith and make sure you consider the source before believing what you read about the history of the Church.

God Bless,

GregA

PS. The New York Times (a paper with a liberal history) wrote in the mid-1930’s saying that Pope Pius what the only major leader in Europe who denounced Hitler and what he stood for. That is an independent source that directly refutes the idea that the he was “Hitler’s Pope”.

Findnmway,

If you like videos you might see if you can rent The Scarlet and the Black starring Gregory Peck. It’s a great drama covering the Vatican’s heroic efforts to save Jews during the Nazis occupation.

Interestingly enough, the chief rabbi of Rome was so impressed by the Pope’s efforts on behalf of the Jews during the war that he eventually became a catholic convert and took the Pope’s own name as his baptismal name. Also many newspapers of the time praised the Pope as well as many Jewish leaders including Golda Meier.

The more factual sources you read about the church, the more you realize how distorted the accusations are. Sure there are sinners in the church just there are sinners everywhere else, but the catholic church teaches the truth and is the church established by Jesus himself. No other church has the credentials or bonafides to make that claim.

Actually I converted to Catholicism when the scandals were first breaking 2 years ago. I don’t judge God or His Church based on the evil of particular people. The Church’s response to the scandals has been proactive with regard to dealing with offenders and in implementing reforms to prevent future problems. Prospective seminarians are being screened much more thoroughly now.

It is very, very sad that the abuses occurred, but it is good that it has been brought into the light of day so reform can occur.

Several of my relative were hid from Germans durring WWII by Catholics.

books.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,12084,844908,00.html
The Roman Catholic Church has traditionally had a very bad press with regard to the Holocaust but, leaving aside the controversial record of Pius XII, it has certainly done its Christian duty. In every occupied country nuns and priests hid people, particularly children, in convents and orphanages, handed out baptismal certificates and taught children to say Hail Marys. Saving life was the aim, not conversion, and after the war the children were scrupulously returned to Jewish communities if their relatives had not survived. Italy, having infuriated its German allies by refusing to enact anti-Jewish legislation, did everything to protect its Jewish population after the Axis fell apart. In 1944, “all the monasteries and churches were filled with Jews disguised as monks and nuns”, and Assisi could boast “the only convent in the world with a kosher kitchen”. Many Polish peasants who put their own lives at risk to help strangers saw it as their Christian duty to do so, despite the pervading anti-semitism.

Could you imagine what would have happened to German Catholics if the Pope had been outspoken against Hitler they way some seem to think he should have been?

The church has been responsible for horrible things in the past, but also don’t forget to make a distinction between horrible catholics as individuals and the teaching of the Church. Also, not to make excuses, but even the reformed churches did some of the same things that catholics were doing. Some of it was a product of the times and christianity in general has done some bad things in the past. You have definitely read some very biased, anti-catholic literature and start by reading the links above to get a little help. But ultimately don’t ever get discouraged. Think of it this way. In 2000 years of organization (oldest running human organization ever) the Catholic Church has survived through heresy, corruption, attacks and on and on. It has never gone back and said that it has taught something wrong or changed a doctrine. It is because of this that we can be sure that Christ’s promise to His Church will last forever. At the same time that Church seem to be corrupt, God raised up great saints who lived exactly what the Church truly taught and that is proof that God will always be behind His Church. Don’t be led away and know that you will only find the fullness of Christ’s message in the Catholic Church.

I wonder why Jesus saw fit to say that the gates of hell would not prevail against His Church ?
Jesus must have seen this beforehand, and I believe hell is set loose on the Church, but we know the out- come.:amen:
