What can I do if I want give away some CD’s with legally copied music on it? This is religious music used as a gift for some friends. I need more help.

The record label will have a disclaimer somewhere saying that it is not legal to make copies or distribute. If it does not state this it should say that it is ok. It is usaly in fine print, they will also say sometime’s that it is encouraged to distribute their stuff. Usaly little or lesser known artist will encourage you to give it away so as to get their name out there. I would say also that if it is a free download that you would have no problem in giving it away. Hope this helps.

The issue is a lot murkier than just stealing. Is it ok to buy a CD from the store, and make an extra copy for yourself? Yes because in buying the CD you have bought license to own the music.

So if I buy a CD can I rip all of the music onto my computer to listen to at my desk and leave the CD in my car to listen to while driving? It seems to.

What if a father buys a CD and does exactly this - is it ok for him to listen to the CD in the car at the same time as his daughter listens to the music on the computer? Can the father listen to the CD in the car, a daughter on the computer, and a mother on her Mp3 player all at the same time?

The song was legally obtained originally, so it does not seem that you are stealing. Copyright laws are those which aim to tell us exactly what licenses we have when we buy a CD. We do NOT have the license to distribute it over the internet, that has been made clear, but do we have license to distribute it in our homes?

Of course it’s a sin.
Stealing has the potential to be a mortal sin, if Im not mistaken.

A person is allowed to “perform” music for a small audience of say family and friends. This would be like a person listening to a cd in a car with family members or at a party with a group of friends. They wouldn’t be allowed to make copies for those friends nor could they broadcast that music to a large public audience without permission.

By the way, anyone saying downloading copyrighted music illegally isn’t stealing is kidding themselves. You are taking the intellectual property of someone without paying for it. If taking something from someone without their permission isn’t stealing, what is?
