When my children were babies, I turned to my doctor spock book for any help I needed. I’m not so sure that was a good idea. Now my daughter just got a Dr. Spock for reference. I am getting her the books from CA and would like to know if these books have any Church backing to them. Anyone have some advice?

Actually the guy’s son committed suicide. I can’t say much else about him, I’m not big on the “no spanking ever” argument.

Actually, Dr. Spock was greatly misunderstood. He never advocated any of the things credited to him except feeding on demand. In fac,t no less that James Dobson met him and talked with him at length.

You want to do her a favor? Grab a couple of Sears books…and a Jack Neumann for good measure…lol. THOSE are some good books, in my not-so-humble opinion…

Spanking would be… Illogical.

Sorry, couldn’t resist 😛

Actually, that’s a popular urban legend that I’ve fallen for myself:
snopes.com/medical/doctor/drspock.htm
Thanks for clearing that up, Jim! We’d all be duped if it wasn’t for the good folks at snopes! 👍

To summarize for anyone not interested enough to look, the rumor could have come from two places:
1- his grandson committed suicide in college
2- the son of an opposing childcare “expert” who advised no hugging or kissing of children committed suicide at 40.

I have gotten some good information from Dr. Ray but I don’t know if he has any reference material or books on infants.

I don’t know anything about Dr. Spock and have never read any of his stuff. I just want to recommend the book “Parenting with Grace: Catholic Parent’s Guide to Raising Almost Perfect Kids” by Gregoery Popcak & Lisa Popcak. I like it because it approaches discipline an familt life from a Catholic perspective.

Thank you, I will check it out and buy not as a Christmas gift, but as a love you gift. Hey, aren’t they the same thing!! 😃

I think books are wonderful, but nobody should blindly follow anything.

Use your common sense and ask yourself the questions - Will this work? and Why? (if the answer is - because the guy in the book said so, start over)

The main fallacy of “negative reinforcement” begins with basic definition.

Negative - A statement or act indicating or expressing a contradiction, denial, or refusal.

Reinforcement - To give more force or effectiveness to; strengthen.

Look more opposite than synergistic to me…

Good topic,

Ronin
