We have a visiting priest who is rather dramatic; lots of “feeling” in the Scripture readings, dramatic inflections in the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and his rhythm in the Profession of Faith is downright distracting - and doesn’t mesh with the congregation.
For me at least, this draws my attention away from the true purpose of Mass, and toward his “theatrics”. I can understand this sort of expression in the homily, but I don’t think it belongs in the Liturgy.
I don’t doubt his sincerity in the slightest, and I understand that emotions are involved, but I’d like to hear from others on this topic. Should Mass be “monotone”, or are more “interpretive” approaches acceptable?
Thank you,
G.
