How do you guys draw a cross? I feel like a lot of the times I try to draw them I can’t get the proportions right and the crossbar seems too high or too low… I may have been doodling more in class lately…

Generally, I don’t think most of us are drawing crosses or doodling in class. Better to keep your mind on the prize for now and that is your education. Do doodle at home or your teacher may doodle on your head-sort of.

There is no single, correct formula for the proportions of the Cross. Look how the Cross grows longer and longer in this sequence of Bible illustrations by Doré.
  1. The Arrival at Calvary.
  2. The Nailing to the Cross.
  3. The Erection of the Cross.

When you are not in class, and when you have completed your homework and chores, get a sheet of graph paper (or use drawing software with a coarse grid spacing and snap-to-grid enabled) and experiment with the proportions. Try different proportions and see what looks good.

If you make the top and sides the same length and the bottom twice as long as those, that will give you a nicely proportioned cross.
