I have a problem. I often dream about living near the ocean in a warm climate. This time of year, in the north is especially difficult. When I get to go, I am unusually happy and begin to get very creative. I “pine” for it at times. Is this desire that is so deep inside from God? Right now I still have responsibilities. I am working on helping my daughter pay for her education. My parents are getting older too and I think I should be here for them. I would miss some of my friends. It doesn’t seem practical. Still, I yearn for the sea. Am I just being ridiculous.

First off, it is not ridiculous to have feelings or wishes.

Second, maybe you just need a vacation. Even a cheap fast one.

Third, obviously you can do things to improve your life at your current home, like use sunlight lamps to feel less depressed by winter darkness. Do some beach things, like setting up an umbrella and towels in your living room, or going to an indoor pool at a hotel or YMCA. One year, I bought a bag of umbrellas for drinks from a party store, and I put them all around the office in random places. People loved it!

Fourth, there is nothing wrong with having long-term goals, and it is never too early to plan for retirement. Maybe your brain is telling you something.

Forgot to say that Peter Kreeft is in your ocean fan club, and has some talks about the ocean and God, etc.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I will work on number three for now. I have been swimming regularly and it does help. Maybe a tanning bed - once in a while. (It has been pretty dreary around here lately.) I will look up Peter Kreeft’s talks on the sea. I guess if God wants it for me too, all the doors will open.

I don’t know what country you live in, so I don’t know where "north"is.

I live in South Carolina, it’s pretty cold here, too. Not as cold, but some of the snowbirds are going to be disappointed. Do you think your dreams may have something to do with a spiritual longing?

I think so. I just listened to Peter Kreeft’s talk about the sea. I cried. I think the deep longing is also a deep longing for God. I cannot put it into words exactly.

The sea is pure. At home there are many distractions, even at adoration or Mass. For me the sea brings true joy, peace, rest and after some time a real creative spirit. I guess I do feel that I am touching God, connecting with Him on some level.

To me the sea represents freedom, singularity and the world.

When I was four I had a vivid dream, I took off my clothes and slipped into shallow water, long elegant reeds twisted gently in the water around me and I swam effortlessly towards deeper water, past fish and finally into the deep ocean and away…

I went to school a little while after that, outside my familiar home surroundings, away from the security of my parents and mixed with the other four/five year olds in the sea of life. Hmm 🤔

last place I’d want to be! too many hurricanes and storm damage. Funny how people can see the same thing but have a completely opposite view of it.

sounds like you do need a little vacation. Life maybe getting stressful and you just need a break.
