Are you obliged to confess a sexual thought that you may have entertained or may not have? I’m not sure if this thought occured while I was dreaming, or if I woke for a few minutes. I can’t remember that and I’m pretty sure that either way, I stopped it, and didn’t give into it…but I can’t remember that either.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated…Thanks!

I certainly hope I’m not morally responsible for my dreams
If so, I’m in serious trouble. :o

Let’s say you have an impure thought.

For there to be grave sin we need:
  1. The Act = in this case the thought
  2. Full Knowledge = Realisation that this thought is sinful
  3. Full consent = Only possible while we are awake.
Therefore, while we are sleeping, we don’t have any consent - no sin.

A priest in a confessional once told me that entertaining impure thoughts that come to us just before falling asleep and just after waking are not sinful because we are drifting into unconsciousness or out of unconsciousness preventing us from fully exercising our free will as compared with being fully awake.

However, it is sinful to stimulate impure thoughts prior to bed time in the hope of creating an impure dream.

Hope this helps.

You can’t be held responsible unless you’re completely awake. But the more you grow in Christ, the less that type of thing will be in your head, and the less it will come in your dreams.
