On January 17th, Drew Mariani hosted a person from the Brady Institute to discuss gun control.

I missed it, and I did not get the opportunity to tape it.

Given that his guest has an obvious biased FOR gun control, and I didn’t see any guest of the opposing view on Drew’s schedule, I am suspecting Drew favors gun control.

However, I emailed him directly, he did not reply. So now I am asking anyone here if they heard his program and what they thought of it. Could you get an idea of where Drew stood on the issue? Did it appear that he was using his pulpit to promote one view or the other?

I am saddened by this as I have seen a gradual decay of Catholic radio over the past years. First they had much EWTN which was neat because the day was marked with various prayers, hymns, and masses - it was very spiritual. Then they went to a largely talk-show format, which wasn’t as good but was OK. Then they went and dumped one of my favorites, Al Kresta, to bring in Drew. At first I thought Drew was OK, just wished they didn’t bump Al for him.

But now, Drew is losing his appeal very quickly.

I wonder if he knows that the CCC does state that those of us who are responsible for the safety of others have the right to use arms to vanquish an aggressor.

I wonder if Drew knows that the CCC states that armed resistance can be legitimate if, among other conditions, there is a reasonable chance of success? If you read all the conditions for armed resistance, the one about reasonable chance of success is the ONLY one in which an oppressive tyrant can render resistance immoral by being more oppressive. All the other criteria allow the tyrant to thwart the resistance by taking actions towards ameliarating the people’s conditions.

I wonder if Drew realizes that same enemy who seeks to remove religious expression from the public arena, views radio airwaves as public property! I wonder if Drew realizes that it may be me, and my gun (and millions like me) that ultimately stands against that tyrant who tries to silence the voice of Catholic Radio. I pray to God that day will never come, but Drew is not helping to stall the progress of the enemy.

I’ll start by saying, no I did not hear the gun control program. However, I have to say that I don’t see a lot of real good “prep” going into Drew’s shows. He seems to just talk about anything that comes up, and doesn’t research things very carefully. (Plus in my area he bumped Catholic Answers which was my favorite 😃 !) A few weeks back he had a guest who was an accupuncturist, and was talking about all the benefits, things they can do, etc. They were nearing the end of the segment when a caller called in to say he thought the church frowned upon accupuncture, so Drew said his next guest, the priest that answers all their call in spiritual questions was there already so Drew brought him on air and asked the question again. The priest said accupuncture was a sin, and it originated with demon worship, and he and the accupuncturist started getting into it. Drew went to a break and when they came back on, almost no mention was made. They just ended the accupuncturist’s segment, and went on with the show. Way to do that pre-show prep! I do not have a lot of respect for Drew’s show style. It smacks of “what can we fill up the next few hours with”, instead of “what would benefit our listener’s most to hear”.

OK, so I missed that show, but I heard him defend it. He only said that he wanted to give both sides of the issue. He seemed to indicate when I was listening that people kill people, and not guns. However, he was sort of disturbed by the number of complaints that he got.

Reminds me of the priest he had on from ND. He was so pacifist that he would allow a burgler to kill his mom. No kidding, I sent Drew a horrible complaint. I told him that my 14 yr old son was screaming at the radio that day.

I like Drew, but agree that sometimes he has on flakes. I exercise my right to switch at that point. Usually I like his guests.

I guess its not suprising that he is backing up the position that our bishops spend a lot of resources lobbying for.

I agree 100% on the lack of prep. It just seems that Drew is not careful.

Catholic Answers is also one of my favorites, but at least my stations air reruns in the morning. I never could call in anyway since I listen in the car.

Katherine2,

Tell me more about the bishops supporting gun control.

It wouldn’t suprise me since bishops can and do step outside their bounds. It is right for them to speak up about issues that are cut and dried, like abortion.

But issues that are not so cut and dried, the bishops are as prone to error as anyone else. We know things are not cut-and-dried when the Catechism itself lists seemingly conflicting teachings.

CCC2265 states that persons who have responsibility for the lives of others have a grave duty to resist aggressors, and use force when necessary. For that reason those people have the right to use (and consequently keep and bear) arms.

I understand that to mean every grown man who is responsible for the lives of people in his house has the right to use arms.

Not to mention, the Second Amendment is really about addressing item number 4 of CCC2243 which states that armed resistance is legitimate if, among other criteria, there is a well-founded hope of success.

The U.S. Bishops probably read only CCC2316 which states that the state has the right and duty to regulate the production and sale of arms. But it justifies this by saying that the short-term pursuit of private or collective interests does not outweigh the greater good.

This short-term pursuit of interests I take it is referring to hobbies such as hunting and shooting. To that extent I agree 100% with the CCC. But the 2nd Amendment is not about hunting and shooting, it is about long-term, preservation of freedom, and ultimately saving lives.

American’s freedom to buy, and own guns results in 40,000 deaths/ year. The 20th century has shown us that all it takes is one despot to rise to power and many times more deaths occur.

If every gun in America were confiscated tomorrow, we could arguably say that we’re saving 40,000 lives/year. But, if one despot were to forcibly take control of the country he can undo 300 years of life-saving gun bans! If private gun ownership is preventing a despot like Adolph Hitler from siezing power in the U.S. that gun ownership is saving 12,000,000 lives!!! Why? Because we have a morally legitimate option of armed resistance as long as we have “a well-founded hope of success”(CCC2243).

FYI,

[ **
**[2243](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2243.htm’);)[ Armed *resistance *](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2243.htm’)😉4) there is well-founded hope of success; and[2265](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2265.htm’);)[ Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2243.htm’)😉For this reason, those who legitimately hold authority also have the right to use arms to repel aggressors against the civil community entrusted to their responsibility.[2316](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2316.htm’);)[ The production and the sale of arms](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2243.htm’)😉The short-term pursuit of private or collective interests cannot legitimate undertakings that promote violence and conflict among nations and compromise the international juridical order](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2243.htm’)😉
Now that I examine CCC2316 it looks as if it is really referring to things like international arms trade rather than production and sale of arms within a countries borders. Notice it cites “conflict among nations and compromise the international juridical order”

If anyone enjoy reading reports about serial killers, he can see most murders are carried out by strangulation. followed by melee weapons like hammers, axes and knives. firearms are the least used.

unsilenced firearms make large noises when fired that’s perhaps why they’re not favored

Ahhh, I love my roommates saying about gun control: “You’ll get my gun when you pry it out of my cold, dead hands you sum b****!”

From thenewamerican.com/artman/publish/article_304.shtml:
Last December, the National Academy of Sciences, which operates under a congressional charter and describes itself as “Advisers to the Nation on Science, Engineering, and Medicine,” released a 328-page report on gun-control laws entitled Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review. In its report “based on 253 journal articles, 99 books, 43 government publications, a survey that covered 80 different gun-control measures and some of its own empirical work, the panel couldn’t identify a single gun-control regulation that reduced violent crime, suicide, or accidents,” reported the December 29 New York Post.
If criminals are going to have and use guns regardless of the legality of them, what good does adding more gun control laws do us?

law forbidden citizens in China owning any firearm. but gangsters still can obtain all firearms they want.
