Even though I sort of had to use the bathroom already, I drank 1.5 liters of water. Sort of just as a game or something. Do you think drinking a lot of water can be gluttonous? I thought it couldn’t because it is not giving in to a sin of the flesh, i.e. I’m not really deriving pleasure from drinking water. What are your thoughts? Thanks.

drinking too much water can be fatal

Not at all. Gluttony is a sin because it takes inordinate amounts of pleasure from something necessary and natural and twists it from its natural purpose. Just like sex can be perverted, so can eating. Sex is natural and in God’s plan, so is eating. When we have sex outside of marriage it is outside of God’s plan and eating more than you need you remain healthy is a perversion of the natural instinct.

I’ve heard from some places to drink 2L of water per day (though I think that’s a bit excessive) so drinking 1.5 L hardly constitutes gluttony, unless you are taking disproportionate pleasure from it and it becomes a god to you 😛

That’s very helpful. Thanks. That was original impression.

Just be careful not to rupture your bladder by overfilling it…though I’d imagine you’d have to have some pretty hefty bladder control to not wet yourself by the time it got to that point.

It depends I guess. Was it flavored water? If so go see a priest right now; you have got some serious problems. 😛

Oh man, you are making me feel bad about that fried soft shell crab poboy and tub of ice cream I just ate.😃

‘An inordinate amount of pleasure’? ‘Perverting something that is a natural instinct’?

I think drinking water way beyond what most people need in one sitting, and doing so essentially for fun (albeit a slightly twisted kinda fun) might just count.

And hydration is really only effectively done by drinking small amounts often, not by downing 1.5 litres in one go, so you weren’t achieving much that was particularly useful by it.

Even drinking an enormous amount of water over the course of a couple of hours can be harmful. Too much water can dilute you electrolites (sp?) enough to cause death. Actually, it can probably be done over the course of a day. Until I was in a VA mental ward I had never heard of “water intoxication.” But it’s a true condition, it’s what happens when you consistently drink too much water.

I just about got in on that once. I got stuck sitting outside on a hot day in July for 3 1/2 hours. I tried to stay hydrated, and just about overdid it. For several days I had problems with balance and thinking straight. Someone finally thought to suggest gatorade. That helped. So, be careful when drinking straight water.

I would consider the games played by some frat boys, etc, where someone drinks a ton of water (often as much as a gallon at a time!) to be sinful and dangerous. Is it “gluttony” exactly? I don’t know, but it is harmful, dangerous, and to be avoided.

Sort of just as a game or something.
Games with that which others will never have enough of seems not to bring Glory to God.
Do you think drinking a lot of water can be gluttonous?
Absolutely. Take more than you need, and it’s gluttony.
I’m not really deriving pleasure from drinking water.
  1. The pleasure you’re getting, however diluted (nice pun, right?), is in the game of it.
    Although,
  2. Pleasure is neither a necessary or sufficient component of gluttony. I’m sure people, at times, overindulge out of habit without regard for pleasure.
