Hello all! Thank you for taking the time to look over my question. God Bless.

Is it a mortal sin to have a few drinks (i.e. beer) and then drive even though the person does not feel under the influence of alcohol?

Another question: Is one drink sufficient for someone to be considered under the influence when driving and is it a mortal sin?

I am very confused on what exactly “driving under the influence” means in view of the Church’s teaching and what degree of culpability there is for the person that drives.

Thanks
Matt

When the influence of the alcohol is sufficient that your driving is a danger to yourself or others you shouldn’t drive. You may not “feel” under the influence but your judgment may be impaired. So is it a mortal sin to drive? The catechism states, “Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety…” (CCC 2290)
