DSS and CPS Anti Catholic?

Of course children proved to be in danger should be protected, but what about cases where there is no substancial proof of parental wrongdoing? My son was taken for 2 months and I’ve been battling it in court for almost a year BECAUSE I HAVE SCHIZOPHRENIA ANS A SPITEFUL NEIGHBOR LIED AND SAID I HADNT TAKEN MY MEDS, despite evidence to the contrary! There was never even SUSPICION of abuse, neglect, or dependency! What is the Catholic view on the current DSS//CPS system?

I’m sorry that you are in this situation. It must be very hard for you to be away from your son. :hug1:

I don’t think there is a definitive “Catholic view” on CPS. Personally, I think they exist to do some very important work, but like any agency it can be really easy to get tied up into bureaucratic messes. It’s my understanding that before agencies like CPS existed, child abuse was seen as a “private family affair” and not something for outsiders to get involved in. Taking steps to protect children is incredibly important, and unfortunately there are cases of abuse where there is very little evidence simply because of how the abuse happens or because parents take care to cover up the evidence. 😦 From what you have written, it seems like your neighbor has taken advantage of the system for whatever personal reasons. If it could be proven that the neighbor filed a false report, could something be done?

Again, I’m sorry that this is happening to you, and I can completely understand getting angry at the entire CPS system for what you are going through; but I don’t think there is a clearcut “Catholic response” to this beyond the need for children to be protected, and simultaneously the desire that children be with their parents whenever possible. It is a really tough situation and I will be praying for you and your son.
 
It sounds like you woud be interested in helping to put safegaurds in place to protect parental rights from unnecessary government involvement and control. Look up parentalrights.org, they are trying to pass a constitutional amendment to safegaurd parental rights.
 
You should become a vigilante and take justice against the CPS into your own hands! Down with the government!

You could check with NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill).

I am a licensed therapist and, if as you say, there is truly no evidence of neglect or abuse then CPS/DSS has no right to take your children.

You should always take your medicine. I assume you have a case worker and they should be an advocate for you.

Mental illness is no reason, in and of itself, to remove children from a home.

I am sorry about what you are going through.

All this being said- I support the work of CPS/DSS in general.
 
Much of what has been said in this thread is making me scratch my head.
 
This whole thread is beyond nuts. However, I think the title is misleading. If anything, the CPS agents might have a prejudice against the mentally ill. There’s no evidence that they took action against the OP because she was Catholic. In my experience, it’s lack of action that has caused me to shake my head at CPS and similar services.
