GKC,

Isn’t that like starting a book at Chaper Two?

Oh, maybe I see. To the Anglican mind, the early Anglican history is unrelated to early continental protestantism, right? I should warn you, I don’t like coincidences! 😉
Ok. Think of it as what Belloc said: England was the accidental reformation.

On the whole reformation:

THE REFORMATION - A HISTORY/Diarmaid MacCulloch.

And that’s that. You’ll have to settle for my expertise, and that isn’t in the continental area. I know England. For the continent, we need Contarini. And he isn’t around lately.

Overall -

Dickens/ THE ENGLISH REFORMATION

Elton/ ENGLAND UNDER THE TUDORS

Scarisbrick/THE REFORMATION AND THE ENGLISH PEOPLE

Somerset/ ELIZABETH I

Starkey/ ELIZABETH I

Dunn/ ELIZABETH AND MARY (That’s Queen of Scots).

Frazer/MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS

Erickson/ BLOODY MARY.

Having finished Scarisbrick’s bio, incomparably the best, and excellent on the issues of the marriage, one might try

Pollard/HENRY VIII - long the standard life

Graves/ HENRY VIII

Weir/ HENRY VIII - THE KING AND HIS COURT

Wilson/ IN THE LION’S COURT Henry and the 6 Thomases in his life.

then

Smith/ THE ELIZABETHAN WORLD

Hogge/ GOD’S SECRET AGENTS (the Jesuits and seminary priests)

If you can find them, Belloc’s A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH PEOPLE, vols 3 &4 are worth reading. His CRANMER isn’t, but don’t let that stop you. It didn’t stop me. And it does have some very good word pictures of its subject. His book on Elizabeth was written very late in his career and has the usual faults.

I didn’t put anything by Froude or Coulton on the list. You probably won’t like them, and I’m not fond of Coulton myself. Froude is sort of the mirror image of Belloc, but with footnotes. LOTS of footnotes. Heavy on original sources.

When you are through with these, there’s more. Edward VII, etc.

Thank you kindly. That ought to keep me rather busy awhile…😉
It did me.

And add Williamson/ THE BEGINNING OF THE ENGLISH REFORMATION. You’ll like that one.

And it’s not that I can’t give you any general reformation titles. (Here’s a good one: Philips/ A POPULAR HISTORY OF THE REFORMATION). I have 8-9 of them. But I’m not well versed in the subject.

Hmm. Let’s make that Edward VI. Must have stuttered.

Good reading.
