i read somewhere where a person died trying to save others his mother didn’t want him to go and he said i can not just stand here and do nothing. because he died trying to save others he only needed 3 masses said for him before her entered heven from purgatory and apperently he was no saint but a sinner who maybe was indanger of loosing his soul.
it just goes to show you the good deeds such as this cover many many sins that we commit through out our lives. so try to do as many good deeds as you can to cover as many sins you have commited.

Good deeds don’t need a reason to be done. The Church looks down on “buying your way into heaven with good deeds” because that’s dishonest. We do good because it pleases us, and because it pleases our father in heaven. Not so we can avoid hellfire.

What i was trying to say is that Charity, good works, Love covers a multitude of sins and yes loosing you own life to save another will do the same.
Thistle the story i got i think was from a book on purgatory i have.
this will explain it better then how i tried to explain it how nothing about loosing ones life but a good read about a nun who helped souls who where in purgatory

Yes you did, when you said “i guess…we can do good works to make up for sins.” (paraphrasing)…Don’t make that mistake. charity and love are good to choose, but don’t 4get the last theological virtue: faith. Don’t wish self-sacrifice on yourself.

All of the good works in the world will not make up for a single sin. The ONLY thing that made up for our sins was Jesus dying on the cross for all of us.
Good works are the natural thing to see for any believer. As St. Paul said, “By their works, you shall know them”.
Laying down your life for others is the maximum in human love. This is exactly what St. Maximilian Kolbe did, in the concentration camp.

God forbid the occasion to ever arise. But if a grenade was thrown at me and my fellow soldiers, I can only hope I would have the courage to lay over it to save their lives. Yeah, there is no greater loyalty or love, than if you lay down your life for a brother or sister. Peace
