If you die with scapular with an Mortal sin still on your soul

Does the scapular give that chance to repent because it protects you from hellfire?

Also certain prayers (the shoulder wound devotion) say they forgive all venial and mortal sins

I know this doesn’t override the confessional but then how does it work?

It is not a magic talisman. One needs to confess one’s sins as soon as possible.

The scapular is not magic, if one dies in a state of unrepentant mortal sin the scapular does not make that go away.

I am here assuming that we are talking of the Brown Scapular. The scapular is a sign of your devotion and consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is only a sign. True devotion is in the heart. If you are truly devoted to the Virgin Mary you must strive to keep yourself in the state of grace always. If not, then you are not really wearing the scapular piously. Your wearing of the scapular is nothing but an external show of devotion, but there is no real devotion in the heart. The scapular works because those who wear it piously, since they have been striving to keep themselves always in the state of grace, are also likely to die in the state of grace. It is also believed that the Blessed Virgin Mary will send the graces necessary to help a person, who has been devoted to her, to repent any serious sin that they might have the misfortune to commit, before the moment of death.

This is what I figured

I was sure it didn’t replace confession but just wanted to have good idea of how it worked

I lost mine awhile back but didn’t really understand what it was

I wasn’t referring to unrepentant sinners getting a free pass but more so religious person making a mistake before death while seeking confession

I think all devoted people have a desire to confess after they sin so that desire and intention is probably what the scapular fortifies so that during an sudden death at a unlucky and sinful time

That the desire to repent is turned into a final opportunity only God can give

I swear this is the only response here 😂😂

I’m not that dumb I promise

Scapular isn’t a magic talisman… Wearing one guarentees nothing.

The scapular isn’t m… oh wait, someone said that already. 😃

I think the promise from Mary on the scapular means that you devote yourself and that when you die

You won’t go to hell
And it’s a sign that heaven matters to you
And if you devote than in the case of sin before sudden death
She will intercede for us

Not trying to explain my own question
But yeah scapular on its own is nothing
We are responsible for putting grace into it

Well, not to nitpick, but technically we don’t “put grace into” anything. Grace (different from merit) is a gift from God, which Mary can intercede for on our behalf. Wearing the scapular, is a special, specific manner of showing our openness to very specific graces that Mary has promised to obtain on our behalf. One still has to cooperate with grace, regardless how great or small that grace may be, or it does nothing. The practical application is that, the state of one’s soul - in sanctifying grace or otherwise - is still the absolute final determinant in whether one faces heaven or hell. But Mary can intercede to obtain the grace of final penitence or perseverance which might otherwise be lacking - swaying the scales so that one does, in fact, die in the state of grace.

Take a look at this too: Brown Scapular Stories

‘St. Claude reminds us: “You ask; what if I desire to die in my sins?” I answer, “Then you will die in your sins but YOU WILL NOT DIE IN YOUR SCAPULAR.”’

I said that wrong 😂
Of course we don’t put the grace
I meant like
We gotta work for it

All of what you said is right though

I think I know what it means now
Either way I still wanna get one

And that Saint quote is funny

I’ve read about a miracle involving the brown scapular where a soldier in wwii (I believe) was so badly injured that he should not have stayed alive by any natural or medical means, however he survived just long enough to make a last confession.

This article was extremely helpful

I do not feel I should wear one now for I struggle with sin and remaining in a state of grace
So to wear one but not always living up to the responsibilities is against the point

I still will fight to get better at this battle and accept the way life must me

I however do have a neat little thing that says “I am in Catholic , in the case of an accident call a priest” in my wallet …now I just gotta find my wallet I put it in but it’s perfect for me as I want a priest with me at death (hopefully after doing something heroic 😉)

I think I’ll just carry something of Mary with me to scare away temptation and beat me into shape when I try to go the wrong way

Also a wrong attitude, something the Catechesis does NOT say or mean. It is NOT against the point of the Catechesis that wearing the Scapular and struggling with sin are mutually exclusive. The Scapular is a sacramental, a miniature version of the Carmelite habit, which is in turn a sign of their devotion to the Blessed Mother. Who else would you want on your side when struggling with sin?

If you feel Carmelite spirituality is good for you, then wear the Scapular. If not, then that’s fine. But don’t let “I’m struggling with sin” be your excuse to not wear it if you otherwise wish to “join”, so to speak, the Carmelite family and share in their spiritual wealth!
