I really just want to get it out of my system, so to speak:

There is a 13 year age difference between me and my brother. I am 20 years old, studying at university and living with my parents. My brother is working as an assistant nurse, and is also living with our parents.

I am finding myself having less and less respect for him the more time passes by. For example, today we were having fish soup for dinner. There were a spoon, fork and knife for each person. Me and my mom were casually preparing the table together, and instinctively we thought hat we only need spoons for the soup, so we took away the forks and knives. No big deal. My brother also got to have the fish head to eat (Don’t judge, it’s in our tradition and culture 😃 ). When he came to the table he asked my mom quite rudely “Why did you take away my knife? I want it.” My mom naturally got irritated by the way he said it, and basically told him (a bit loud maybe, but I think it’s understadable) to calm down.

The thing is, it seems he doesn’t want to realize when he is wrong. Instead of just giving it a rest, he continues to argue even more aggressively as if his honor is directly offended, up until the point that I get really annoyed with his behavior and tell him sternly to just take a new knife instead of making a fuzz out of it, and don’t fight with us. If he wants to fight he can do it with his co-workers instead, by which he answered that his co-workers aren’t as dumb as us to take away the knife. My dad also asked him what the big deal is, but my brother exhibits a 5-year old like behavior and and said that mom started to get loud (maybe she was a bit loud, but she didn’t start anything). He doesn’t give up. He started mumbling “I will never vacuum the house again”, so I answered “You don’t need to live here either” (he is 34). Even then he retaliated by saying “I do more than you do”, to which I just replied “Oh, okay then”.

It went on for a bit there, but I think you get the point. I always feel guilty in these situations as if I shouldn’t be so stern on him, but on the other hand he shouldn’t be allowed to behave just as he pleases just because he is with us. I find myself telling off my brother more and more often. I don’t think he respects my mom enough. Even if my mom gets loud, I don’t think he needs to escalate even further, let alone to the point that insults starts coming. On one hand he is a very devout Catholic, on the other hand he does things like this. 🤷

Maybe we see see thing differently, by brother and I. I just think he acts like a 5-year old around us at times. I don’t want to be mean, but I am positive he doesn’t behave like that around any other groups of people. He isn’t exactly a tough guy.

My rant is over. I would like your honest opinion on this; Who was right and wrong in this?

Its winter. Its cabin fever. Everyone needs to get out of everyone else’s hair for a while. Your brother needs a week vacation, somewhere completely different from where he lives.

Happy January!
