While they may not be the inspired word of God, how historically accurate are some of the early writings that did not get chosen to be part of the New Testament? For example, the gospel of Peter?

It’s pretty interesting stuff, but if the church doesn’t consider it at least somewhat true, I might as well just read The Davinci Code…
 
I think we might also remember that there are other examples of early Catholic Christian writing that, while not considered inspired by the Holy Spirit, supports Sacred Tradition in that the writing shows early continous doctrinal and dogmatic beliefs.
