Hello,

I just activated an account here so I could ask a quick question. I used the search tool with no thread showing on this subject.

I want to purchase a book that would be a collection of writings from the early church fathers so I could give to a friend. This friend is a protestant, and I wanted to show statements from the early church that present evidence of the Sacraments from the Catholic Church, historically.

Thank you in advance for a book that would help me.

A quick Google Shopping search on “early church fathers” came up with several pages of material (CDs, books) but you may want to resort it by price because several of them are rather expensive.

I was really surprised to see “Protestant” and “Catholic” editions of some of these things! I wonder if the protestant version is designed to help them understand the Catholic church is the one true church or if it shares only those writings which support their theology/doctrines.

I find CDs and DVDs work better with friends and family because they can listen in their cars, especially if the CD isn’t very long. Careful, though, because it looks like several of the listed CDs are digital versions of the books to be used on a computer. But if your friend likes to read then by all means, refer him to some books to read, and if he likes computers the CDs may be even better because of the quick search features they offer.

I think I’d look for catholic books about the early fathers written by converts from protestantism though, like Scott Hahn or Steven Ray, along those lines. They tend to speak in protestant terms to highlight the differences which led them to see Catholicism as the truth.

The most useful I’ve found for the purpose you mentioned is “The Faith of the Early Fathers”, a 3 volume set by William Jurgens. It has a doctrinal index that allows you to search by topics which often concern doctrinal differences between the CC and Protestant theology

I agree that alot of the books by Scott Hahn arevery easy reads and at the same time very in depth in his research. Another one is The Apostlic Fathers translated by J. B. Lightfoot and J. R. Harmer.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the responses.

I’ll check out those titles and authors you mentioned. I hope this will help him see the Catholic Church in a more positive way. I completely forgot about Scott Hahn. I’ll have to check his books out as well.

Thanks a bunch for the help,

Take Care,

Mcbane

I purchased a CD on Ebay entitled The Early Church Fathers. It cost me $4.95 plus shipping. There are 38 volumes on the CD.

I would recomend ***Crossing the Tiber. Or Early Christians: In Their Own Words. ***Or Four Witnesses: The Early Church in Her Own Words.

Early Christians: In Their Own Words.

I found one book with that title, and another with a similar title (exact wording without the " : ". Which author? Was it the Society of Brethren (Rifton and Eberhard Arnold). Just wanted to be sure before I purchase.

Thank you,

Mcbane

The one I saw was not by Rifton and Eberhard Arnold with the lion on the cover.

Here ya go with links.🙂

Four Witnesses: The Early Church in Her Own Words.
By Rod Bennett

Crossing the Tiber: Evangelical Protestants Discover the Historical Church (Paperback)
by Stephen K. Ray

Faith of the Early Fathers: Three-Volume Set (Paperback)
by William A. Jurgens

The Fathers of the Church, Expanded Edition (Paperback)
by Mike Aquilina

Here is a listing of books by Scott Hahn.

The Mass of the Early Christians (Paperback)
by Mike Aquilina

This last one is really good because he shows, from their own writings, how it was that Christians in those early years actually worshipped.

I’m not sure about the “Early Christian’s” someone else will have to give more details on that. I also could not find anything about the “Apostolic Fathers”.

Thanks again for the responses. I really appreciate the support, and will put them to good use!

This is a great list and thank you for the links to all those resources. I can give the ISBN numbers for The Apostolic Fathers. that way one should also be able to find it. the number is 0-8010-2199-5. I thought that this book contained a lot of information including the Didache, which is the teaching of the Twelve Apostles.
