Any suggestions on how to host a Catholic Easter dinner? There will be numerous kids of varying ages. I want to make sure that the importance of the day is stressed. Our guests are very devout Catholics, so any teaching/explaining if the Ressurection won’t be necessary.

Start with Mass 😃 Then, do one of the Hours and make sure to say Grace.

I think the food is the least important thing. If you want to stress the importance, focus on communal prayer.

We will definitely all attend mass. The Hours is a great idea.

With all the secular Easter eggs and Easter bunny abound, I wanted something more meaningful for the kids besides an egg hunt.

Mass, Easter egg hunt, Movie on Resurrection, eat cupcakes (mmm…), pray the rosary, soccer (Pope Francis), and CELEBRATE!

But I’m getting ahead of myself. We still need to go through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ before we get to His Resurrection.

How old are the kids? I would like to know how praying the office goes, because I tried to say Compline with my nieces (10 & 8) a few days ago and it was a nightmare!

Regina7,

If you go over to the Eastern Catholic forum here on CAF, I posted a thread on the Byzantine Catholic idea of an Easter basket, which might give you some ideas for your food. There is some rich symbolism behind each of the foods placed in the basket. You may be interested in giving a brief overview before your feast, or otherwise offering a handout about the meaning behind the foods.

You might try making resurrection rolls. You can find the recipe online. Actually, there are two forms of making this, and one is a bit messier than the other. Basically it means taking refrigerator crescent rolls and marshmallows and some butter/margarine then some cinnamon and sugar. Have the kids watch you make it and explain to them what each part means. The marshmallows represent Jesus, the butter/margarine represent the oil he was anointed with once he was dead and the cinnamon and sugar represent the spices he was anointed with before he was put in the grave. I suggest you take the time to wash you hand a bit once you have put a marshmallow with each crescent roll bit to get any butter off your fingers. Then, you enclose each marshmallow with a crescent to represent him being put in the tomb. I can’t remember right off what the oven temperature should be, I’m thinking around 350 to 375. Bake them until they are starting to brown, again I’m not sure here, but I think it’s something like 15-20 minutes. But start checking on them after 10. Let them cool before eating. The marshmallow will have melted, leaving you with an empty “tomb.”

I almost forgot to add, after washing your hands, then take each one and bring the corners to meet on the top and then pinch them to sick together. I didn’t wash my hands before doing this, and the butter made it impossible to get a good “seal” on the edges.

Music - always creates the ambiance!

I wish there were as many popular Easter Songs as Christmas songs. Songs with “Allelula” are important. The Gloria is back and on iTunes there are at least 15 different versions of the Gloria (even a carribean one). “In the breaking of the bread”, “we come to your feast” and such also remind us of the celebration o Christ’s victory.

Another idea I read in an Easter Book is doing the “Eunamous Walk” (sp?!?!?). Anyways take a walk with family and greet everyone you meet. As you greet them look to see Jesus in them as the disciples did on the Enamius (sp?!?!?) walk. I’ve wanted to try this for years, but the girls were too young.

HAPPY EASTER!

HE IS RISEN !

The town is named Emmaus. This idea is so sweet and special! Thank you for sharing it!

Thanks for all the ideas! I’m excited to host today!

Happy Easter!

My grandma always had little cardboard figurines set out that were the different characters in the story of the resurrection and they went with this open tomb scenery so we could act out the story. It was really similar to a children’s nativity scene, but Passion/Easter themed. It was a really neat set. I wish I could find one for my house. It’s hard to find good Easter decorations that aren’t bunnies and chicks.

My in-laws found a Lego (well, off-brand, but similar toy) Nativity set a few years back, and this year they found one for the Last Supper. The kids are still a bit young for it, but in a few years I think that will be pretty fun.

I have been working on slowly collecting placemats, tablecloths, etc. in the appropriate liturgical colors for holiday celebrations. It’s small, but I think it’s nice.

I don’t mind doing spring-type decorations for Easter (baby animals, eggs, flowers, etc.) because renewal and new life is part of what it’s all about, but it would be nice to find more specifically Christian decorations (or even lambs! I looked all over for lambs and found none. Though we did eat lamb for dinner…)

Water fight. If you go outside and have a water fight between mid-March and mid-April as the main event between when brunch settles and when the late afternoon noshing starts up again, and you remember it. It puts that Easter season sprinkling at Mass in a whole new light.
