Perhaps I’m oblivious today, but what does this have to do with Eastern Catholicism?

Sorry apparently I put this on the wrong section. Instead of a charitable answers like “try posting here, you might get a better answer” I got one liners telling me it has nothing to do with eastern catholicism. Ill post to yahoo answers next time

Thanks.

God bless you.

What is creepy about it? The hoods are so the penitents can remain anonymous.
I understand the concern after looking at the photos; they do bear an uneasy resemblance to the KKK. Of course, maybe that’s where the KKK got the idea.

I think that it is generally creepy to Americans because of how similar it is to the hoos that the KKK wore and we don’t have any history of people dressing as such for Church processions. 🙂

As has been mentioned, the hoods are to keep the penitents anonymous. The pointed hat was a symbol of humiliation (kind of like a dunce cap). The whole outfit is about penitence and humilty, which is contrary to it being used as a symbol of racist superiority in the USA.
