That’s why it is called the Easter Vigil. That’s also why we wait to start this Mass until after the sun has set. And Yes it does satisfy the Easter Sunday obligation. I like going to the Vigil Mass because our Pastor like big fires

yes the Easter Vigil is the principal liturgical celebration of Easter and actually should be the only one. Mass is offered during the day to accommodate those who cannot attend the Vigil. and side not to those on this forum, the current manner of celebrating the Vigil was revived long before the liturgical changes in the wake of V2, by Pope Pius XII. And btw it is a true Vigil. The weekly Saturday evening anticipated Mass is just that, not really accurate to call it a vigil.

At that time evening masses were not yet permitted. The Vigil started with the lighting of the candle, etc at about 11pm. One timed it so the Gloria got sung at midnight or shortly thereafter. Choir directors, like my wife, who had a couple of Easter morning masses to do appreciated the shift to an earlier hour when evening masses came in.

Thanks all! I thought the same, but some of my family members told me otherwise, so I began to question myself! Just needed a second opinion or two…

One could understand the question even though the word “vigil” is included. The vigil is later than all other vigils and, as already explained it is a true vigil unlike the rest of the Saturdays during the year.

Also, why isn’t the Easter Vigil emphasized more throughout the season? I am 42 and I just recently found out that the Easter Vigil is the most important day of the Church calendar. I had always thought Easter Sunday was!!?! Do most people go to the Easter Vigil and the Easter Sunday Mass? Are we expected to go to both?
