Do the Eastern Catholics have large pilgrimage centres of Our Lady such as Lourdes and Fatima?

A friend told me Marian apparitions of this nature were mainly in the West.

Where such apparitions are mainly I would not venture to say, but they are not unknown in the Orient. Some information on one famous example can be found here and here.

Our Lady of Lebanon (Melkite) Jounieh, Lebanon

Our Lady of Lebanon (Melkite) Jounieh, Lebanon
Actually, Our Lady of Lebanon is Maronite, although there is a Melkite church of more recent vintage than the original Maronite shrine church, (not the hideous monstrosity – which wasn’t pictured – constructed in recent years), which is literally next door and forms part of the complex. I should also point out that the shrine is not in Jounieh. It’s in the town of Harissa which is in the mountains overlooking Jounieh bay.

Thank you for the corrections.

Marian apparitions on a large scale are normally a western thing. However, there was an apparition of Our Lady in Egypt. The event is called Our Lady of Zeitum. It is officially recognised by the Catholic Church and the Coptic Orthodox Church, and the event was even witnessed by non-believers.

Below is a short documentary on the event:

For Ukrainian Greek Catholics, the greatest Marian shrine is in Zarvanytsia, Ukraine, which receives some hundreds of thousands to its annual pilgrimages. In 1867 Pope Pius IX granted Zarvanytsia the status of a sanctuary and the icon of the Mother of God there was crowned. It survived many tribulations including the Soviets who burned its monastery to the ground. For many Ukrainians it’s their Lourdes.

Type in “Zarvanytsia” in Google Images Search function and you can get a feel for the size of the place.

A 2014 youtube clip in English from one Zarvanytsia pilgrimage:

Night time candle-light processions there where a Ukrainian Ave Maria is sung:

In these trying times when war has been brought to Ukraine, the Ukrainian military also makes pilgrimages to Zarvanytsia to ask for God’s help and pray for peace for their country (the video is in Ukrainian). It starts off with a young Ukrainian girl praying to the Mother of God to protect her father:

Kaduthurthy Valiya Pali (The Big Church at Kaduthuruthy) built in 400 A.D by Knanaya Catholics is one of the most blessed sights of Marian Apparition in the Syro Malabar Catholic Church. The church known as St. Mary’s Knanaya Catholic Church and traditionally Kaduthuruthy Valiya Pali is a large pilgrimage center for all Catholics. In 1596 the Church patrons were having trouble erecting a very large granite cross outside the cross, it is believed that Martha Mariam appeared miraculously in the form of an old woman and up-righted the monolith cross with only her hand. The church remains as a great pilgrimage center today especially for Marian Devotees.

There’s a Maronite shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in North Jackson, Ohio (just west of Youngstown)

I have been to events at this Shrine. It is an absolutely beautiful place. For the Feast of the Assumption there is a multi-day event with Maronite, Byzantine, and Latin (both EF and OF) liturgies, religious talks, healing services, processions, and more. If someone is traveling in the Youngstown -Pittsburgh area, this Shrine is well worth the visit.

You know, I am originally from the Youngstown area, and I’ve never been there! I will have to make it a point to visit when I’m home in the spring!
