Hi

I have a reasonable understanding of the sacrament of Holy Matrimony in the Latin Catholic Church. Sadly, I don’t have the same knowledge when it comes the Eastern Catholic Churches. I’m hoping you can help me out by answering the following questions about the mystery of Holy Matrimony.

All these questions are about the Eastern Catholic Churches:


  1. *]Who is the minister of matrimony: is it the man and woman who are marrying OR is it the priest?
    *]Does the priest act as the church’s official witness?
    *]Is it correct that deacons cannot witness/bless marriages?
    *]Is matrimony made up of two services: betrothal and crowning?
    *]Do the couple make vows (I’ve heard in the Eastern Churches they don’t)?
    *]I’ve also heard the couples don’t say: “until death us do part”; is this true?

  1. The priest or bishop is the minister.
  2. No he is not a witness, see 1
  3. Yes deacons can not perform marriages.
  4. Technically the betrothal is its own ceremony, but it generally occurs just prior to matrimony.
  5. There are vows, sorta , at the betrothal , but not in matrimony.
  6. Yes this is true if I remember properly. In the byzantine tradition, the marriage sacrament is considered eternal lasting into the resurrection.
 
Formosus, thank you for you answers. I’d like to be clear on a few of your answers. The bishop or priest is the minister of the sacrament: is he a witness too? I know you said no. Don’t the Eastern Catholic Churches require someone to witness the marriage for the Church or isn’t this necessary because he’s present anyway because he’s the minister?

Have I confused the Eastern Catholic Churches with the Eastern Orthodox Churches. I thought the Eastern Churches didn’t allow deacons to be the minister of a marriage. May be that’s only in the EOs.

The Eastern Catholic Churches do not permit deacons to officiate at weddings, and a wedding in a Roman Catholic Church in which one of the spouses is Eastern Catholic must be officiated by a priest; otherwise, it is not valid.
 
Given the different nature of matrimony, can I get married again in the Byzantine Rite?
 
The more I read about marriage in the Byzantine Rite, the more I want to seek an annulment and then get Crowned 👍

The assisting and blessing of the priest or bishop makes it a sacred rite, for validity, so it is more juridical. And then there are also witnesses.

CCEO Canon 828
  1. Only those marriages are valid which are celebrated with a sacred rite, in the presence of the local hierarch, local pastor, or a priest who has been given the faculty of blessing the marriage by either of them, and at least two witnesses, according, however to the prescriptions of the following canons, with due regard for the exceptions mentioned in cann. 832 and 834, 2.
  2. That rite which is considered a sacred rite is the intervention a priest assisting and blessing.
 
Hello.
I have a big decision to make: my fiance is catholic and I’n an orthodox.
Is there any way how we can have a traditional wedding in church without changing the religion?
I’m so scared…

The Catholic party should be able to get permission to marry in the Orthodox Church fairly easily without switching Churches. I recommend taking that route.
