How to eastern Catholics feel about mystics like Faustina, Fatima, Gemma Galgani and their different visions and messages? Also are there any prominent mystics in the eastern traditions?

The Eastern Catholic/Orthodox approach to visions, locutions, prophecies, and the like tends to be very skeptical. Not that we deny such things happen, but we tend to ignore (for lack of a better word) them when they do. Interestingly, this was also St. John of the Cross’s approach - influenced as he was by the Desert Fathers.

There are many prominent mystics in the Eastern traditions, but they weren’t all necessarily visionaries. Some of the more popular Orthodox mystics are St. Seraphim of Sarov, St. Theophan the Recluse, Elder Ephrem, Elder Paisios, and St. John Maximovich to name a small handful from the Byzantine tradition.

One very popular Eastern (Maronite) Catholic mystic who has a strong following even in the Roman Church is St. Charbel.

Phil is right - We have many Saints but they do not do a lot of visions of the future - Their prophetic gifts focus in the arena of prophetic insight rather than projection - More on the order of Padre Pio… iow Their concern is for the assisting of those in need in their contending for the Faith, and the struggles the faithful are encountering therein…

A young woman once came to our Church and described how she was a pretty much nominal Orthodox who lived near a monastery, and her girlfriends dragged her over to the monastery to “meet the Elder”… So after much insistence, she consented, and the Elder called her over, and told her the pivotal points of the life she had lived, and what she needed to do for her Salvation… She became, at that point, very serious about her Faith… She had given up on it, and no longer believed such Elders as this one even existed anymore, and was wondering if they even had existed at all in the past…

Would you call this Elder a “Mystic”???
