Hi so I might be switching over to Eastern Catholicism from the latin church because my father is a Greek Melkite and it’s where I’m told I belong (God help me :()…

Do any Eastern Catholic Churches do mass in English?

The use of the local vernacular is Byzantine tradition, so if people speak English where you are, then most likely. There may be some Arabic because of the cultural heritage but it will likely be mostly in English.

The first thing you should learn if you will embrace the Byzantine way for life and faith, is that we call our Liturgy the Divine Liturgy, not the Mass.

Secondly, yes, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated in English. Ruthenians and Melkites have pretty much incultured very well in the US and more often than not, they will be in English.

The parish in my city is all first generation Arab and Syrian immigrants (Greek Melkite) the masses are not said in English… And my mom is Irish so I’m white (I’m not racist or anything) while my Dad is Palestinian… I don’t fit in there 😦

I’m Filipino and I go to a Ukrainian parish. Talk about not fitting. Its not the race really. I do feel not fitting in when we do bilingual Liturgies. But other than that, people have been very warm to me and my family.

I think we’ve been down this road in another thread. 🙂
How much you choose to be involved with the Melkite Church is your decision. If you do decide to become more involved I hope you will do so with an open heart. We go to liturgy and services to worship God in community and receive His mercy. As I suggested before finding someone in the parish who might want to take you under her wing could help with how foreign it is for you there at this time.

Do you have a spiritual father? Really you need to be working with one as you begin to explore this. Your local chancery may know of some bi-ritual priests who could assist you with this exploration.

You can be in any rite you chose. If you want to be a Latin rite Catholic, that’s fine.

But If you want to worship in the Melkite Church, that’s fine too. If your father is Melkite, how can you say you wont fit in?

I am Latin rite, and I have been to Divine Liturgy at Melkite and Ukrainian Catholic Parishes. Sure, I feel a bit different, but once you figure out how the liturgy works, start crossing yourself backwards, and get really good at singing "kyrie eleison,"the you’ll be comfortable knowing youre with fellow Catholics!

Backawards? It’s the West that crosses themselves backwards.

Only Byzantines cross right to left. All other Eastern traditions cross in the direction the Latins do. 🙂

Peace and God bless!

I know that. However, my understanding is that in the early Church, everyone, both West and East, crossed themselves right to left, as the East does today.

However, at some point in history the West began to go left to right instead. One theory I have heard is that the people were mimicking the priests and saw the reverse and started going left to right. Or maybe, it was the priest who would go left to right so that the people would see right to left. I am not sure but that is a different topic for a different thread.

Incorrect. The Assyrian Church of the East (Nestorians) cross themselves right to left. I assume the Chaldean Catholic form has been Latinized.

Oh, I completely misread Ghosty’s post. I thought he was saying how everyone but the East crosses left to right.

Perhaps the Assyrians do it as the Byzantines do, I’m not familiar with them. All the Oriental Orthodox do it left to right, however, and certainly weren’t Latinized.

Peace and God bless!

The maronite church I visit does about two-thirds of the DL in English.
