Hello All!

After reading another thread regarding guitars, I got the idea you all could help me out. What is an easier chord/strumming song that I could learn on my acoustic? I am taking lessons and my instructor wants me to come up with a few songs we can learn during the lessons. I was thinking hymns so that I could do the Kumbya thing with the youth group.

Any suggestions? I know many open chords (although F and Dm make me angry ;-).

If i had a hammer… Peter, Paul, and Mary… (not the deciples)

in fact most of Peter, Paul and Mary would be great for what your looking for… 👍

“Morning Has Broken” is a nice easy one - in the key of C it consists of all open chords (although there may be an F in there) with each chord played for one or two whole measures. Probably 5 or 6 different chords (C, G, G7, Am, Em, F) so it’s a little more interesting to play than some really basic 3-chord songs.

Mostly Metallica, but I really like to do ‘classical’ pieces…with heavy distort and overdrive…I’m thinking someone should start a band that does Gregorian chant to metal. I think they’d go quite well together…

Yes, I AM crazy.

Thanks for the advice! All are songs I know and I think I can have some real fun with them on the youth trips!

I just have to get that open f chord perfected. I actually got a great hint here yesterday…don’t use too much pressure. I tried it last night and the F sounded so much cleaner. My success rate went from 60% to around 85% on the F. I am a happy camper.

I really need to learn those new songs. If my wife hears “Ode to Joy” or “The first Noel” one more time, I may need Extreme Unction! 👍

Regarding the F chord - as a beginner, it may be easier just to play it on the first four strings, rather than all six - that way, you only need to do a small barre across the high E and B strings, which many people will find easier than the full barre chord.

Another trick to get the feel for playing barre chords is to pick some that are slightly higher up the neck, e.g. Bm or Cm. They’re a little easier to master than F or B-flat (which I think is the hardest of the basic chords to hit reliably). But that way you can build up the strength in your first finger, and also some confidence in your ability.

It helped me to play G as a barre on the third fret. Same as the F, but moved up two frets.

How about the Fminor flat dimished 7th chord?

.
Oh boy, I am depressed again. That was the way I was playing the F chord. I’ll have to try it full barre just to make me feel better about my failure at playing the “open” F.

I’ll get there eventually…I hope!

As a self-taught, I learned to play bar chords (from watching Pete Townsend) by wrapping my thumb around to cover the low E and A strings. It works great and allows me to do some interesting bass line stuff by moving my thumb slightly. I have had a few purists cringe when they see me do it, but many highly skilled guitarists have advised me to do whatever works for me.

Try it, you might like it.
