I was wondering if anyone on here has struggled with an eating disorder and if they were able to overcome it, how?

Every time I think my problem with food has passed, it comes right back. Every time I make an appointment to talk to someone about it, it starts to get better and then I don’t see the point of going anymore. I’m so tired of having such issues with food and letting it affect my everyday life so much.

Any advice?

I think you know the answer - the cycle you’re in isn’t working. This is why you need to form a relationship with a therapist who you see on a regular schedule.

🙂

I agree with the previous poster - make that appointment! Eating disorders are serious business and usually have life-long consequences. You may not be feeling the symptoms (however you “express” your disorder: restricting food intake, binging/purging, etc) right now, but you need to start therapy to retrain your mindset as it pertains to your relationship with food. I developed an eating disorder in high school and have been dealing with it for years. I’d say it’s on the mild side - I’ve never been hospitalized, but have been to therapy (although I had other things to discuss with the therapist, too). Many people respond positively to therapy, although it may take meeting with one or two therapists before you settle on one you feel comfortable with. Therapy should be safe and comfortable.

Remember: it’s 100% okay to ask for help in this situation, you can’t do everything by yourself!

You need to get into counseling ASAP. Find a good counselor who you can trust, and work through all your issues with them. I can see from your other posts that you have a tendency to fall into unhealthy relationships and unsafe behaviors. This is a pattern caused by some personal emotional issues, perhaps past trauma, I don’t know. You need to find a counselor who will help you get to the root cause of all these behaviors if you wish to overcome them. Some behavior therapy might be good as well to help with your decision-making skills when faced with these circumstances.

I can see that you are a good person who struggles with making healthy choices at times, and are seeking to correct that. In order to help yourself, however, you need to step out of your comfort zone and get some serious help. The path to recovery sometimes seems like one step forward and 2 steps back, but if you persevere you will come out on top.

You are in my prayers. God bless.

It’s funny that you say that because just before writing this thread I felt embarrassed. I thought people would think, wow this girl is screwed up, after reading my older posts. Thank you for your response and I am really going to look into counseling this time. I think I need it for more than just my eating disorder lol!

Eating disorders are varied and can be very complicated. They can be emotionally related or purely biological. For many people who are compulsive overeaters, any carbohydrate consumption over 30 or so grams per day makes them want to eat constantly. I am one of those people. A large plate of spaghetti will only make me physically hungry two hours later. The only time I seem to be able to eat like a sane person is when I am following an “Atkins” type of lifestyle. A low carb/no carb meal will hold me over just fine for 5 to 7 hours.

Your situation might not have anything to do with mine, but I just wanted to share my experience with an eating problem.
