Ecclesiastical Approval vs. Imprimatur

Hi all,

I read Louis Bouyer’s fascinating “The Word, the Church, and the Sacraments” and noticed, in the front cover, that the Ignatius Press copy I have doesn’t have an Imprimatur. Instead, there’s a note saying that it’s “published with ecclesiastical approval.”

Can anyone explain to me the difference between these two statuses?

I was surprised that Bouyer’s text, which seems thoroughly orthodox especially considering his position within the Vatican II committees, didn’t have an Imprimatur.

Here’s a link that says more than you’re probably looking for.
But As far as our friends at Paraclete Press, they publish for other churches as well as Catholics. Hence the “approvals”.
