Lorarose,
Your answer depends on the timing involved. Many home tests are very sensitive these days, down to as little as 25u or less. However, each woman’s cycle is different, so not all women will have the same levels of HCG at the same time. Assuming you are using a middle of the road sensitivity level test and are more than a week late from your normal expect period, then the chances are very small (like less than 2%) that you could be pregnant, ectopic or otherwise. If you are 2 weeks late, then you probably have a better chance of being hit by lightening then of being pregnant. However, if you are not yet late, or are less than a week late, there is still a possibility that you could be pregnant. As is usually the case with ectopics, there simply isn’t as much HCG being produced, so you would show lower levels, but the level at which most test start detecting these days even an ectopic would should up within 1-2 weeks late. Hope this helps settle your mind. It can be very frustrating wondering.
