I have posted this treatise a number of times here without one single complaint until now. I have it saved in word doc so I can reproduce it a will. A forum search on “Petrie Dish” will reveal this. No complaints until now.
But it shouldn’t confuse you because my original comment about your post was that you should read the OP. Since you say here that it was written as a response to some other question or comment it makes sense to me now why it seemed inconsistent.

I stand by my comment that you should take the time to address the question being asked. To do otherwise will lead to alienation rather than understanding.

You seem to think you know how all Protestants feel about Mary.you do not,no more than I know the heart of all catholics concerning idol worship, angel worship,Mary worship,ETC…I have NEVER regarded Mary as a ‘petrie dish that God used and threw away’…that is offensive.why are you so defensive and angry?is this a forum or what? as far as artwork, who said anything about that? I happen to love biblical artwork, and have a great sense of respect for the architectual beauty of many catholic churches/cathedrals. if all Catholics were like you, there would probably be even more protestants here in America.
First of all, you took it too personal and you believed it was pointed directly at you. You’re overreaction seems to indicate some guilt. The saying: “The guilty pig squeals first” comes to mind.

Second, I have posted this treatise a number of times here without one single complaint until now. I have it saved in word doc so I can reproduce it a will. A forum search on “Petrie Dish” will reveal this. No complaints until now.

Thirdly, Protestants does not mean “ALL Protestants”

Hello
can someone out there please give an explanation as to **why **Mary is seen worthy of worshipping/praying to? just an honest question from a non-catholic…
You can sugar coat this all you want. It is still an accusation of Marian worship.

Also this is not my stuff. It was originally posted by an EOC person known as FundieFighter as an introduction. The original post is gone because of the Great Crash…

I saved it because it was beautifully written. The original writer is also a published writer.

Also the editied Title “EDITED TITLE: Do Catholics Really Worship Mary?” was being answered.

I have a question:

I personally do not (anymore) pray the rosary because of the hail Marys. I think that most of the prayer is biblical my only concern is “holy Mary Mother of God prayer for us sinners”. I believe she’s a saint absolutely. I believe she is the theotokos (sp?) the Mother of God, but to ask her to prayer for us, can she hear all these people praying? Isn’t that like omniscience being able to hear all those different people at the same time? I have not recieved an answer to this question by anyone yet.

Just a question.
Easy question. Even if hearing a prayer meant being in the location where the person was praying, at the very most to hear all the prayers of every person on earth one would only have to be on (or very near) the surface of one tiny planet in one solar system in one galaxy of the universe. That is much, much, much less than being everywhere in the universe, which in turn is much less than being everywhere in all of God’s creation. Think in terms of your own vocabulary. You know many thousands of words, but you certainly do not know an infinite number of words. And “omni” anything implies infinity.

Besides, who says that one has to be where a person is praying to hear that prayer? Using simple human technology I can hear a hundred thousand people sing the national anthem at a sporting event, without leaving my home. How much more powerful then is God’s “technology”? Read Rev 8:13, where John (not even yet a perfected saint in heaven) heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, without being where all those creatures were located. That is vastly more capability than is needed to hear every human prayer, and yet God granted that capability to one who was not even perfected in heaven with him.

Here’s how it was explained to me.

Worship is the perfect Sacrifice of the Mass as far as Catholics are concerned.

Catholics never offer a Mass to Mary, therefore, they never worship her.

Other behaviors that may constitute worship in the hearts, minds and behaviors of other faiths, are not understood to be worship to Catholics.

That is consistent with Catholic theology (as far as I know), and that is the only theology Catholics are bound to. Others may see it differently, but it IS consistent within Catholicism.

Has any Catholic EVER claimed to be worshiping Mary?

I challenge anyone to attend a Mass and see for themselves.

It is not the statue of the Blessed Virgin which leads the opening procession.

It is not Mary, Mother of God, but Father, Son, and Holy Spirit constantly evoked.

We do not genuflect facing the statue of Mary upon entering and leaving the pew, but the tabernacle housing the body of Christ.

We do not cross ourselves in the name of Mary, but in the name of the Blessed Trinity.

We do not recite Mary’s prayer, but the Lord’s.

We do not confess to Mary, but to Almighty God.

We do not sing hyms to Mary, but to God.

If you’ve been told Catholics worship Mary, attend a Mass and see for yourself.

But brace yourself first, for you’ve been lied to.

I suppose we can bestow honor and glory on whomever we decide, but my burning question is why is Mary seen as being worthy of worship/prayer?I do praise her for her part in Gods plan.I do not see a scriptural basis for attempting to call on her for intercession.inThe Bible ,Jesus is identified as our High Priest and Mediator, and our Passover as well.and when God sought human intercession,He ‘looked for a man who would stand in the gap’.I believe He expects intercession to come from us for each other.but we have to go to Jesus as mediator.
Okay, this is not the first time I have said this, but I think I can say it again, hopefully well enough for the purpose:

When I was a little girl, I had the most wonderful Christian grandmother. She was a real prayer warrior. People who knew her were forever calling & asking for her prayers because she seemed able to reach out & pray Heaven & earth together.
So, when I wanted a prayer really answered, when it was so important to me, I would always go to her, & whisper what I wanted & needed. She would gather me into her arms, & again, she would “pray Heaven & earth together”.
Since she passed away, I have yet to meet anyone who can pray like that…Someone once said to her, that she seemed to have a 🙂 “hotline to Heaven”. Such folks are not, you see, found on every street corner.
Now, when that kind of prayer need comes up, in my life, or in the lives of those with whom I come into contact, I pick up my rosary, and I begin to whisper in my Mother Mary’s ear, and she, as it were, gathers me into her arms, and she begins to pray Heaven & earth together, because she is the greatest prayer warrior of all, and I am, you see, just a little child.

God bless all here.

In the Protestant sense of the word, not only do Catholics not claim to worship Mary, they deny it vehemently. Now if they really did worship Mary as a powerful (perhaps all-powerful) deity, wouldn’t it be instant condemnation to turn around and deny that deity? If we really thought Mary was deserving of deity worship, we would be utter fools to deny that we worshipped her!
I challenge anyone to attend a Mass and see for themselves.
In a typical Mass there are well over a hundred references to God, Christ, Jesus, Lord, etc. There are about four references to Mary (and none of them suggest she is anything more than a creature).

Wow, Zooey, that’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve heard in a long time! Thanks for that…

As other posters have pointed out, Catholics do not give to Mary the worship that is due to God alone. It’s a different kind of honor and love. To compare the love and worship that one gives to Mary to the kind that one gives to God is similar to comparing the love that a man has for his wife to the love that he has for God. It’s a different type of God. Catholics do not honor Mary as the Supreme Being, as the Triune God, or as being in any way equal to the Triune God.

Different type of love is what you meant to say, I trust 😉
