Hello,
I am a freelance editor and committed Catholic. I’m writing here to ask for your help in finding some information that might help me with a book I’m editing. The author, a white man, developed a relationship with a black, disadvantaged boy from a single-parent (mother) family. The author is desperate to get the word out to society of the terrible damage being done, especially among American blacks, of fatherlessness. All these heavyweight intellectuals–economists, sociologists–whose books I read to help me edit, say no one understands the rise of the single-parent family and illegitimacy since the early 1960s. Well, I want to say, I do! I think anyone who has delved into the Church’s teaching on contraception would have a suggestion. And to my shock, I read an article by two academics, a married couple, that I saved but have lost, that addressed this very thing. It said they did not themselves oppose abortion or contraception, but, sorry, their demographic research showed that the rise of the single-parent family was directly connected to the rise of the use of contraception and abortion. It was published in around 1996 or 1997. I’ve done an archive search of the paper (the Star Tribune, Minneapolis) but they don’t save ops page stuff. I’ve done a web search with no fruit. If anyone knows of sociologists, economists or other academics who are or have done similar work, maybe they could help me. I’m interested in recovering the names of the couple who did the article described above, as well as the article, as well as any newer research on it. It helped that these were secular types. If I can show this to my author, he may have the courage to put it in the book. Thank you!! I am putting this in the arms of the Blessed Mother. She’s never failed me.
