Anyone else had it with EENS, No salvation outside the Church, Can protestants be saved etc for the moment? There have been enough threads recently that anyone could find out easily what the Church teaching in this area (see Catechism) is or the ‘rad trad’ position espoused by several posters.

The poster who simply posted a dead horse being flogged summed it all up.

I think this topic should go the way of sedevacantism (i.e. Catholic Answers will forego discussion…)

Any seconders?
 
I understand your reasoning, but if we start throwing out every topic that’s been addressed before – even this many times – well, they say there is nothing new under the sun. 😃

I vote to let the discussion go on.

I don’t think it should be a banned topic, as its falsely harsh interpretation by many Catholics continues to be one of the greatest chasms that separate our brethren from us. It causes hatred of Catholics by non-Catholics and excessive pride in Catholics. Serious Catholics on this forum use it to make assertions that are in sharp contrast to many of the lessons Jesus taught.

While it is true that incessantly recurring themes make it seem like we are swatting mosquitos in the jungle in the hope of reducing their number, there are a couple of approaches to take to this. One is to recognize that no single one of us have the time or the energy to answer every single question of interest on this forum (believe me, a few weeks ago I spent most of my waking hours trying). Another would be to reply to posters with links to what has been already said, or write a statement and put it on a web page and link to it. (On the latter, if you want to post something and don’t know where, send it to me; I have some web sites where I can put it.)

EENS = *Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus, *which is the Latin for “Outside the Church, there is no salvation”.

This has been a constant doctrine of the Church, and can be found in the writings of the Early Church Fathers.

The issue arises in the interpretation of the doctrine. On one side of the spectrum, you have the ultra-literalist interpretation that no one who is not a Catholic will be saved…to the ultra-liberal interpretation that somehow all people are really “members” of the Church.

The official Church position (from the CCC, paraphrased in my own words) is somewhere in between. It holds that membership in the Church is the normative means of salvation, but that those not in perfect communion with the Church *may *also be saved.
