I know this topic has been on here many times, forgive me for bringing it up again. I know that getting drunk is a sin and that drinking is not when done responsibly.

My question is more specific. Last night my friend and I went out and had ONE beer and ONE cocktail. We both hadn’t eaten all day and the cocktail was made very strong. Needless to say, we felt it.

I had no intention to get drunk. I have a “two drink” limit. I also have a zero tolerance policy towards driving. For example, one drink means I am not driving and I make arrangements, I make them in advance. Which were made last night. We were not smashed or sloshed, it just felt more than “buzzed”.

So, I was trying to be responsible. I know the requirements for mortal sin but it is hard for me to judge this situation. Anyone help me out?

While it is heavily dependant upon body mass, two drinks do not a drunkard make.

There was no offense; you didn’t intend anything so IMHO you’re fine

Now if you specifically didn’t eat all day so that you could enhance the effects and then proceeded to drink to excess that might be a problem…but two drinks?

I remember back in high school when Father came in and gave us his “how to drink” lecture
Basically it’s great socially, great with food, don’t mix, and don’t do it on an empty stomach

PS if you “felt it” in the morning you violated another of Father’s cardinal rules…glass of water and an aspirin before bed

I didn’t eat all day (which really means I just snacked) because I wasn’t hungry. I am on the lighter side. Not thin as a toothpick but I am just under “average”. I don’t feel anything this morning.

It was just weird. The drink is a stronger drink but even my friend said he was surprised that he was past buzzed and he is slightly overweight.

I’m tending to lean towards it just being a venial sin (which is bad enough). I guess more because I had no intent and was trying to be responsible. I mean come on, a beer and green dragon?

The reason I am worried is because I want to be able to receive tomorrow at Mass and I can’t get to confession before then. I hate not receiving.

Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut Steve. We never got the “how to drink” lecture from our priests and I went to a Catholic school. Weird huh?

Our priests were a fairly down to earth bunch (I suppose you have to be in an all boys school) and the drinking age was 18 back in those enlighten days 👍 so that speech was a natural for them

If both you and your friend “felt it” perhaps it was the mixed drink?
some bartenders can be a little heavy handed when it comes to portions. You could be sober as a judge after 8 watered down drinks but 2 strong ones could send you for a loop

I know folks who just stick to beer or wine because they have a predictable alcohol content.

Wow, if this is a mortal sin I’m in BIG trouble.

Personally I think you were very responsible. I wouldn’t think it was even a venial sin.

“beer before liquor, never sicker”

“liquor before beer, you’re in the clear”
😃

I don’t know how true these adages are but I’ve heard them before several times. Maybe that’s why you felt it so much. 😉

And I would think it was only a sin if you had the intent to get drunk. You didn’t know it would have that effect on you. I’m sure you’re fine. 🙂

A few multivitamins before you go to bed = no hangover.

Works every time.

I don’t any sin there at all, mortal or venial. You were not “sloshed” and even went so far as to make alternate driving arrangements in advance. Quite frankly, I commend your level of responsibility. You may tend towards the scrupulous, but I guess that’s preferable to the alternative 🙂 .

Different people can take different amounts: however, drinking then driving is unwise to say the least.

Here’s the most important thing to remember here:

YOU CANNOT COMMIT A MORTAL SIN BY ACCIDENT!

It’s somewhat difficult to define intoxication “morally”. The reason that getting drunk is sinful is twofold. First, obviously, would be gluttony–you’ve taken more than is necessary or even prudent. I don’t think 2 drinks, regardless of your weight, would fit this criteria.

The second reason is that alcohol reduces your capacity to reason, which in turn lessens your ability to withstand temptation. Even if you “felt” the effects of the drinks physically, it doesn’t sound as if it affected your morality. You had already made arrangements to be driven home, and you stuck to them…seems like good judgment to me.

Oh, a third reason that it could be sinful of course is physical damage to your body, especially your liver, but it generally takes more copious amounts of alcohol to cause that, so I’m sure you were okay there too.
