Let’s say someone is about to undergo surgery. A priest comes but because of a lack of privacy he can’t comfortably hear the patient’s confession. Instead he grants absolution for all his sins with the understanding the penitent patient will go to confession as soon as possible.
Now let’s say Sunday comes and the patient, newly discharged from the hospital, is attending Mass. He has not yet had an opportunity to go to confession.
Question: does the absolution granted allow him to receive Holy Communion even though he had mortal sins to confess? Keep in mind he had called the priest specifically to confess but the priest didn’t feel comfortable with this due to a lack of privacy.
