I heard that this is not proper to do during communion. Does anyone know more about it?
I’m just curious because I’m an EM, and I bless the kids when they come up.

I think its extra-liturgical and not specifically called for , for a priest to give a blessing in the communion line.

But if the priest is giving blessings, I don’t see any harm in it, and I don’t see any harm in an EM giving one either.

OK, pet peeve time here

It’s perfectly fine for an Eucharistic Minister to give a blessing, as a Eucharistic Minister is either a priest or a bishop.

The Minister of the Eucharist is one who calls the Sacrament into being, in other words, says Mass. And that is something that is only done by a priest or bishop.

Not even a deacon is an EM, but a deacon is a Minister of Holy Communion, the distrubtion of the Eucharist.

The term Eucharistic Minister, or Minister of the Eucharist is used nowhere in Church documents to refer to anything but a priest or bishop.

Sorry, by EM, I meant Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. I’ve heard that it isn’t proper for them to give blessings.

That is correct, it is not permitted for an EMC to give a blessing during the distribution of Holy Communion.

A woman in my Parish, who can be described as “zealous” blesses Children by placing the ciborium on their heads. Also at my school masses, the teachers make the sign of the cross with the Eucharist/Jesus. Very troubling 😦

Both of those practices are definatelly not permitted in the Latin Church.
