Pope Vigilius. He’d wanted to be pope for some time when Empress Theodora made a deal with him that if she got rid of the current pope and made him pope, he would condemn the Council of Chalcedon, proclaim Monophysitism as part of the Catholic faith, and re-install a heretical bishop (forgot his name.) as Patriarch of Constantinople.Which Pope was that?
He was all set to do that when he had a sudden change of heart and instead re-iterated what Chalcedon said. That turned Theodora against him.
It’s really an interesting story, sounds like something from a movie. Vigilius was a corrupt cleric who helped plan the downfall of the previous pope, and was willing to teach a heresy, then suddenly he’s willing to suffer the same fate of his predecessor instead of give in. Even though he knew what Theodora was capable of. Sounds like the Holy Spirit to me.
