I married a good woman, hard working, faithful, kind, and loving. Not Catholic, but plenty of moral fiber. We married under pressure from her family earlier than we had hoped because she had a child.

Many years later, I am at the end of my rope. She is still kind, loving, and faithful, but she is no longer hard working. We have made some decisions that in retrospect weren’t so smart, taking on debt to start a business, etc… It has been hard.

What has me at my absolute limit is that some years ago my wife just quit on me. She quit working. She quit taking care of herself. She quit taking care of me. She doesnt work, she doesnt cook, she doesnt clean (much), she doesnt shop, she doesnt take care of her animals very well… She has let long term manageable health conditions degenerate to the point where she is basically an invalid at the moment, and almost died for lack of management of these issues several months ago. Sometimes she will go several days without bathing. Needless to say, intimacy is essentially over.

She says she is looking for work, she says she is following her doctor’s orders. She makes just enough effort in both directions so that she can say she is doing it, and has been doing so for years.

In the meantime, I have worked full time, and either attended school full time or run a business for many years. For the last few years, I have been the sole provider in a depressed economy where wages are horrible. I earn less now per hour than I did 20 years ago. On a slow week, I work 60 hours, on a big week I work 90 or more. I had an anxiety attack about a year ago because I was working 80 hours plus continuously for over a year, and just couldn’t take it. Since then, I have slowed down to about 60 consistently… but I have no idea how I have kept us out of bankruptcy… Which of course is not even an option because it would put her family assets at risk…

So here I am with a sick wife who wont work when she is well, broke, broken, stressed out, rapidly deteriorating health of my own due to overwork and stress… Down to one car with bald tires, living in a house I cant afford so that my wife can keep her belongings and animals, 40 miles from my cruddy job(s)… She spends her days surfing the internet and dreaming of making it big in a hobby business, which has provided no useful income of any kind in the 2 years she has been spending our resources on it… and blaming her unhappiness on me…

I don’t want a divorce. And there is no way that I am just going to walk out when she is on her back… but honestly, the only future I see for myself is more of the same, and this is completely intolerable… Talking doesnt help. In fact it just makes it worse.

The way I see it, I have one or a combination of several options.
  1. find some way to by hook or by crook get her well enough to get a job with insurance, and run like heck.
  2. Move to a smaller place closer to work so I can redirect that money to paying off debt… Whether she likes it or not. This of course means hauling 90% of her belongings to the dump and dropping her animals at the humane society, and dealing with all the associated drama… But it also means that I eventually have a shot at a life again, and perhaps she will eventually decide to give a darn…
  3. Get a third job, and hope that when the stroke finally arrives, God is merciful and takes me quickly.
I understand that the Catholic thing to do here is to just grin and bear it… I guess I am a bad Catholic then, because i am having a hard time seeing how continuing on this path is anything other than prolonged suicide…

“I understand that the Catholic thing to do here is to just grin and bear it…”

No. You do not need to passively endure abusive conditions. You are not forbidden to take positive action to make things better.
(1) “Running like heck” is not acceptable. That’s desertion.
(3) Getting a third job and waiting to die is not acceptable. Aside from the fact that you likely couldn’t keep going that way, it just prolongs the misery.

(2) Might be a solution to the immediate problems. The fact that you’ll have to dump some possessions and pets, and endure the drama, does not make it wrong. If you have a duty to care for her, you have also a right to do what’s necessary to care for her - and a right to care for yourself as well.

Have you considered the possibility that your wife suffers from Clinical Depression, or some other form of mental illness? If so, she might in fact be unable, not merely unwilling, to help herself.
Whether she’s ill (in this sense) or not, you have the right to do what’s right, even if she generates an uproar over it.

I will pray for you, and will check this thread for your reply. May the peace of Christ fill your heart, and may He show you the way.

A lot of things are at stake here. Your wife sounds like she needs a good physical. It is possible she could be depressed. 2.The internet just like the old soap operas is very addictive and hours can go by before you realize how long you have been surfing along. It may be difficult for her to focus… Can she make a small list of household chores every day and accomplish them?. 3The animals, I love animals and if it were possible I would have a house full of them but that would not be good for me and certainly not for the animals. I can say this because I have been there. If this is true of her than maybe she needs to see that for their sake they all need to go to multiple homes. Are the internet and the animals a diversion for her from something else? Does she avoid taking a bath and care of herself because she is trying to shut you and or other people out? She may need a counselor to help her rediscover who she is and to feel joy again. I know you say she is still loving but sometimes that might be a mask to avoid some unresolved anger issues. Please don’t be offended. I do not know you and these are only questions and I am in no position to judge her or you but maybe a good Catholic counselor could help you resolve these issues.

Yes, I have considered it. I grew up with a mother who battled with clinical depression her entire adult life. She never quit working or gave up like this. She was very difficult to live with, but she never just quit on us… Heck, I don’t understand how anyone can just quit like that actually…

Anyway, I have put up with this so long now that maybe getting her to a psychologist is necessary. I agree that option 2 is the best, I guess I have concerns that she will do something drastic like refuse to leave and make things even harder for us financially… She has said as much…

Thanks for the prayers, I have been praying about this for years now and haven’t found a way out of it yet…

No, your observations are not offensive. She is still a sensitive and caring person. She tries to be emotionally supportive. She has just become so wrapped up in herself that she is incapable of thinking about being considerate in other ways than emotional…

Its not helpful that this all makes me very frustrated and angry. I know that mentioning it makes it worse, but sometimes I cant help but vent my frustration about it. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired, and I am rarely in the mood to listen to her complaints after working my backside off…

As far as pushing people away, i think the opposite is the truth. She requires attention, and I work so much that I dont have the energy and time to give her what she needs. I spend time with her when I can, but I really dont’ care about fantasies anymore… I want to hear about what was accomplished, and sometimes I want to either vegetate or sleep… I’m certainly not perfect.

Yes, she is very angry that our goals did not work out. She blames that on me.

Perhaps a counselor is the way to go…

Yes, a counselor is the way to go. If she won’t go, then go yourself, and find solutions to these problems. Tell the counselor you need an intervention. you want you wife to work with you to solve your financial crisis. Bring a list of your ideas to solve the dilema. Also state you want to divy up the work load more fairly. Often times a third party can get you both to hear what needs to be said, and make positive changes! (It’s more humane than the cattle prod you’ve been thinking of using :D)

You are right that you need to slow down. You are so exhausted, and overwhelmed that you want to give up! A more humble dwelling near your work sounds perfect. She needs to face realilty. Perhaps she can keep some of the pets, which she needs to care for. Please do your best to see the others have good homes. I’m pretty confident if you threaton to take them to the pound she will fight you like a grizzlie bear! Remember what you want is cooperation! So play nice, and encourage any step in the right direction.

Here is the biggy! Pray together. Ask God for a miracle to help you work together, and find a place that you can afford, and love!

We’ll be praying for you!

Make sure it’s a no-kill shelter (for the pets).

My heart goes out to you, I simply have nothing additional to add to the responses you have received but encouragement. You have a promise from me to pray that God resolves these issues for you. Be patient and listen I am certain God will lead you forward.

I agree with the other posters that it sounds to me like depression. I really hope you can get her to see someone. There are definitely different levels and different ways people function when depressed. I was diagnosed with a mild long term form of depression when I was in college. I still functioned at a very high level at that time. But everyone is different and depression is obviously different in different people.

Prayers for you in this situation.
