One of my (supposedly good Catholic) friends just got engaged, and I wanted to throw her an engagement party, but she told me today that she will be moving in with her boyfriend and his family for the next few years until she graduates college. Suddenly, I’m not so sure if celebrating is the right way to treat this; any thoughts?

Well… it definetly is a sticky situation. Personally, I would not be the organizor of the event. However, if someone else organizes it, I would probably attend as long as it is clean. May not the best advice but my opinion

Is she moving in with her boyfriend, or has his family offered her a room in their house to stay? Because the later doesn’t necessarily mean they are living in sin, even if the boyfriend is in the same house.

I don’t know, but she’s admitted that they have sex when she goes over to his house and his parents are gone. Even if she’s not living in his room, his parents won’t be there all the time.

I don’t know… everyone sins and everyone makes mistakes. If they weren’t going to be moving in together but they were still having sex, that wouldn’t be any different, would it? At least they are planning to get married in the future. Hopefully they realize at some point that engaging in premarital sex is wrong and they stop. That happened to a couple friends of mine and they stopped having sex about 10 months before their wedding.

Well then the issue is premarital sex, not “living in sin”. Because where she is living is moot, she’s already revealed that to you. When did she reveal to you that they are engaging in premarital sex? Was it at the same time as her telling you she was moving in with her boyfriend’s family or have you known about it for awhile and if you have, what made the living arrangements seem more significant?

No, she revealed both to me today; after she told me she was moving in with her boyfriend’s family, I told her to be careful not to be tempted, and she basically said that it wouldn’t be an issue, they’d already done it multiple times.

While it’s nice to want to give her a party…you aren’t obligated to do so.

If someone gives them a party, I think you can go.

My Dad lived with my Mom and Grandparents for about 2 months before the wedding. He had come from Italy to marry my Mom, and they let him stay there. They weren’t “living together”

It sounds like your friend is “not living together” but sneaking behind people’s back to be with the fiance…

Hopefully she will stop and make a good confession.

So, you wanted to throw a party, but found out she was sleeping with her fiance, and now you don’t want to throw a party for her?

Get ready to “un-party” lots of your friends over time if these are your requirements. Not that it makes anything right or wrong, but if you are going to set up a sort of “moral checklist” before you celebrate engagements of you friends or family, realize many (most) will fail your list.

Is this your first close friend getting married?
