Enrollment into the miraculous medal

I always thought that the miraculous medal is something you get blessed and then just start wearing in order to have the protection of The Blessed Virgin Mary. I also heard that there are special graces that come with wearing it. But looking into it on my own more. I found out there is a whole enrollment process. Can someone please explain the process?
 
I’m interested in this, too. I went to the Saint Mother Teresa museum in Ave Maria last Friday and discovered she had a devotion to it. I’d like to know more myself.
