Hello. I’m a bit confused over what Ephesians 6:12 is saying. I converted a year ago from knowing it as meaning one thing as a protestant. I thought it meant "We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, and the rulers of the darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places. "

I never knew that principalities and powers were angels. Please elaborate your wisdom.

12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places.

For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens.

This is one of my favorite quotes in the bible. It helps me understand that their is so much out there that we cannot see. I’m an engineer and for me I struggle like everyone else. And it helps me to know there is a spiritual battle going on right now as we speak. And I know that I need to …"take up all God’s amour, or you will not be able to put up any resistance on the evil day, or stand your ground even though you exert yourselves to the full. So stand your ground, with truth a belt round your waist, and uprightness a breastplate, wearing the shoes on your feet the eagerness to spread the gospel of peace and always carrying ht shield of faith so that you can use it to quench the burning arrows of the Evil one. You must take salvation as your helmet and the sword of the Spirit, that is, the word of God.

I like the the message of the importance of prayer later in 6:18. I also like how there is only one offensive weapon, the sword of the spirit, the word of God. This passage gives me a lot of comfort when I’m down and don’t know what to do…

Our battle is a spiritual one. Satan is out to bring down every one he can because he hates God. There is evil in the spiritual realm and it manifests itself in the natural realm as sin. This is why it is important to get all the help we can because Satan is the great deceiver and father of lies. He misleads and distorts the truth so we deceive ourselves into sinning as in Adam. Evil is not just a man running around in a red suit and pitchfork. It is much more subtle and cunning. How can the events such as mass murders and world wars come about? These events are not just bad judgements on the part of people, they have the marks of evil behind them in which people cooperate with that evil. The spirit world is suggestive and can seem attractive without the graces God has given us. This is why the Church is so important in giving us the means and direction to “fight the good fight” and “persevere till the end”.

The entire quote in Eph 6:12 “For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens.”

The specific focus and readiness of the war we Christians fight isn’t JUST against the people in this world but against the spiritual powers that influence and guide their wicked ways. The righteous don’t struggle against angels because they are God’s friends, messengers and our some are our guardians. We wrestle with demon powers, for they used to be angels, and who now tempt us through the world in images and trials. Powers and principalities are the devil and his minions who prowl through the world seeking to whom they can destroy. And satan can have influence on the unrighteous so that they act against us Christians using the world and its rulers.

So is that verse refering to the rank of “fallen” angels? Interesting. Reccomend any furthur reading on demons that would expand on a similiar topic?
