I can’t tell if I am being paranoid, but that whole part about Das Leona seemed… eerily perverse–I don’t know how to explain it, but I also couldn’t see, unless the boy were raised in an explicitly *anti-*Catholic way, that it could be more than a coincidence.

And if anyone has any idea about how to handle it with young Catholics who have already read it, I would really appreciate them!

I think the whole book is just written bad with its plot stolen from Star Wars and set in a bad LotR’s realm. (Hehe)

In the second book, Eldest, (it was my misfortune to read it) Eragon goes to live with the elves for a bit. They’re atheist and vegetarian and annoying as well.

And you have to realize that this is a fantasy book. In most fantasy, the characters are somehow polytheistic, atheist, or pray to ancestors. If they were monotheistic it would create some sort of political-correctness clash.

I wouldn’t worry too much.

It’s been a while since I read it, but I recall not being too impressed either. Very derivative. Better to just re-read the books he was obviously “borrowing” from (or outright ripping off).

As far as anti-Catholicism, I don’t remember anything in particular striking me, but in general I’ve noticed that for a lot of people they tend to mix together all the worst parts of the Medieval Ages together and associate it in their minds with Catholicism.

If you find yourself in conversation with people who are really interested in fantasy/medieval, I would encourage them to start reading more actual history. Even warts and all, the Church really comes across looking good. Civilization just about died in Europe, and probably would have were it not for the Church 🙂
