Eric’s Clapton’s most underrated song! “Holy Mother”.
A beautiful version of one of Eric’s most underrated song! “Holy Mother”. He sung this song at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1986. I loved it, but then again I love Mary!

Here are lyrics to the song, “Holy Mother”.
Holy Mother, where are you?
Tonight I feel broken in two.
I’ve seen the stars fall from the sky.
Holy mother, can’t keep from crying.

Oh I need your help this time,
Get me through this lonely night.
Tell me please which way to turn
To find myself again.

Holy mother, hear my prayer,
Somehow I know you’re still there.
Send me please some peace of mind;
Take away this pain.

I can’t wait, I can’t wait, I can’t wait any longer.

I can’t wait, I can’t wait, I can’t wait for you.

Holy mother, hear my cry,
I’ve cursed your name a thousand times.
I’ve felt the anger running through my soul;
All I need is a hand to hold.

Oh I feel the end has come,
No longer my legs will run.
You know I would rather be
In your arms tonight.

When my hands no longer play,
My voice is still, I fade away.
Holy mother, then I’ll be
Lying in, safe within your arms.

I am brain dead, but remember when he was with one of his early groups he did several very religious songs, we used them on retreats in college sometimes, can’t remember the group or the song that stuck in my mind but it is on the Clapton Unplugged album. In fact this group was considered one of the very early pioneers in Christian rock, before he went on to other things.

If I recall correctly, Clapton wrote this song in response to the suicide of his friend Richard Manuel, pianist and singer for The Band.

Several years later, after the tragic death of his young son, Clapton wrote the big hit “Tears in Heaven.”

Someone downloaded the song onto my computer a while ago. I agree, it is a good song.

What a GREAT song! 😃
Wikipedia doesn’t say anything about whether he’s Catholic or not.
But what about the lyrics “I’ve cursed your name a thousand times?”

I’m a big fan of Oremus, who are Clapton fans, too. :clapping:

If you like “Holy Mother,” you might like 3 songs Oremus does:

Wow! Already loved Clapton and “Tears in Heaven” - yet another reason to add to the list (and the smokin’ solo at the end!)

I love Clapton. One of my all-time favorites.

I don’t recall ever hearing this song, it’s beautiful.

Click on the side-bars (YouTube link), and watch the vid of Pavarotti & Clapton!

“Tears in Heaven” is probably my favorite Eric Clapton song, next to “Holy Mother”.

I’ve never been able to comprehend how performers can sing these pieces without losing it! “Tears in Heaven” is a tribute to Mr. Clapton’s son who fell out a skyscraper window!

How can you sing this in front of thousands of people and not “lose it”??

Yes! He was briefly in a band called Blind Faith after he left Cream in late 1968. There was a great song he did, with Steve Winwood on lead vocals called Presence of the Lord. Here’s a video somebody put together with the music: youtube.com/watch?v=9ns7Ah4yLGc

The lyrics are:

I have finally found a way to live
Just like I never could before.
I know that I don’t have much to give,
But I can open any door.

Everybody knows the secret,
Everybody knows the score.
I have finally found a way to live
In the color of the Lord.

I have finally found a place to live
Just like I never could before.
And I know I don’t have much to give,
But soon I’ll open any door.

Everybody knows the secret,
Everybody knows the score.
I have finally found a place to live
In the presence of the Lord.
In the presence of the Lord.

I have finally found a way to live
Just like I never could before.
And I know I don’t have much to give,
But I can open any door.

Everybody knows the secret,
I said everybody knows the score.
I have finally found a way to live
In the color of the Lord.
In the color of the Lord.

Thank you so much for posting this song, and that website… I can’t believe I never heard this song before. I really needed to hear it, thank you.

Actually, this is not true. He wrote 'Circus Left Town" over the death of his son. The fans took “Tears in Heaven” to be a healing agent for the death of his son, and this reaction has helped him immensely.

God must really love him. He wants Eric to grow closer to Him.
I believe God’s been pruning Eric.
