Pope Benedict in his encyclical God is love describes beautifully, profoundly that the love of God for us is both “Eros and Agape”.
Eros is passionate, seeking union with the other. God has this infinitely for us.
Agape is self-giving love, self-emptying, sacrificial love. God has this type of love in infinite amount/degree for each of us.
Marriage must thus be an image of the love of God…and so marital love - conjugal union - must also be both eros and agape.
Agape, as Pope Benedict says, “perfects” eros, elevating it.
