There was an unexpected end to the AA retreat I was on this weekend, at the Serra Retreat House in the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking Malibu. Fridays and Saturdays were devoted to AA’s 11th step. All looked forward to the next day’s conclusion.
But about 5 AM Sunday morning, I awoke to a burning smell. No electricity or running water. A quick check outside showed a red glow over the ridge. The Santa Ana winds were blowing strong. Fire trucks came up from Malibu with orders to evacuate.
So that ended the retreat. I have no idea if the staff of the retreat house were also ordered to evacuate, but our orders were loud and clear. Down the road we went, passing a couple of fire trucks on the way up. Upon arrival at Pacific Coast Highway, several more fire trucks passed on their way to Malibu Canyon Road.
I arrived home at 8 AM to find all was well with the cats. Brother Michael Andruschak had taken good care of them. Kali was isolated in my bedroom. He was out from under the bed, and perched on a closet shelf with a blanket to rest on. The litter box had been used, and it was obvious he had been drinking and eating. So far, so good.
I am now in the living room with Fluffy on my lap, and Silver relaxed on the floor. I will be praying for the firefighters.
