I’ve already decided, one year after our baptism, not to attend the Mormon church anymore, and reclaim my Catholic roots. But my wife told me last night that she wants to remain a Mormon because she has “faith” that she can be “sealed” to our children for eternity. Even though she doesn’t think Joseph Smith was a prophet, and she doesn’t believe in almost all of the teachings of the church, including the BOM, having an “eternal family” is very attractive to her.

I believe that God has a plan for us, and that as Christians we will meet in heaven again, even if we’re not Mormons.

How can I tell her that “eternal families” are an invention of the church? Do you know what does the Bible say about families reuniting in heaven?

Thanks!

i dont thnk scripture speaks of children and parents relationships after death, but Jesus cleary states that marriage lasts till death. When you go to Heaven, we will all be brothers and sisters, with God as our Father, and Mary as our mother(this is my belief anyway, I don’t know if it’s supported by the Church though, but I think it’s certainly in line with Catholic theology)

Does she think the Catholic Church teaches that we will not remember each other in Heaven or something?

I don’t know what is involved with the Morman teaching of ‘sealing’. The Communion of Saints are the faithful departed who are now, or will one day be, in heaven for eternity. The Lord will be the final judge.

“At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” Matthew 22:30

Let your wife be reassured that we who endure in Christ to the end of our days will be reunited with the Lord in heaven, and our love for Him and each other will only grow more for all eternity.

Heaven is paradise. But it is meant to be hoped for in faith as to what it means. St. Paul had a glimpse of heaven and he said we have no idea of what awaits us.

I believe heaven will so good that it will far exceed any attempt of the human imagination.

Instead, put your trust in the Lord.

By the time we reach Heaven, we will have no attachment to that which is not God, because we will be in ultimate communion with God himself, as well as have attained beatific vision by his majestic grace.
In addition to this, the purpose of marriage is not purely for the benefit of pleasure and interpersonal affection. Any relationship’s, especially marriage’s, main goal is to serve as a path that will help lead us to God. Marriage will NOT exist in Heaven, because the sacrament will have been completed! We will not need it anymore, because we have reached the goal! Alleluia!

Anthony V sums it up pretty well. The communion of the saints will be saturated in agapic love with God for eternity. The love between a husband and a wife is merely a glimpse of the beatific vision that will inundate us when we reach paradise. If you want to talk about a bride and a groom, William and Kate’s royal wedding will be nothing compared to what will happen in heaven or during the resurrection!

It all goes back to the Mormon concept of God and Christ and ours as monotheists.

Does anybody know what the Catholic Church teaches about meeting your family in heaven?
Thanks!

Hi Pablo, doesn’t your wife realise that if JS is not a prophet, then all those temple sealings are completely in vain. Mormon temple work is a waste of time because it has no foundation in truth, so the so called sealings will have no effect

If you resign from the Mormon church, or get excommunicated for being a practicing Catholic, your wife will never be sealed to her children because children can only be sealed to a husband and wife who have been sealed. So if you quit the church, her “salvation” is forfeit. She cannot make it it into Heaven without you, and she cannot be sealed to your children if you two are not sealed. She also cannot make it to the Celestial Kingdom without a husband to “pull” her through the veil.

In addition, she will be pitied as a woman without a practicing and faithful husband, and her household will not be counted when they are counting membership of wards because only Melkezidek priesthood holders are counted, not women or children.

I am in no way trying to guilt you back into the church. However, I will pray for your wife that she be graced with the true presence of Christ and released from the deceit and lies of the Mormon church. Only a supernatural act of grace can help your wife discover the truth behind the lies.

When we go to heaven, we will be one with Christ. We will see God face to face. We will have no more need, God filling them…but it will also be a communion of God with us…and that includes all our loved ones and friends, and good people of the world who chose God vs evil.

So, if you are married in God’s love, you will continue to love in heaven, and our love will only increase.

Catholics don’t think about it…we don’t think about getting married in heaven or having more children in heaven or having our own separate place where we can rule in heaven…it is about our union and happiness found in God.

But the communion of saints will continue, we will all be together.

I suspect you are oversimplifying your wife’s postion and there is more to it than a single belief in the “eternal family” If she has faith in this teaching, she has faith in much more.

Well, at least that’s what she told me: That she has “faith” that eternal families are true. But she also tells me that she thinks a lot of doctrines are “weird,” one major one being the garments and not drinking coffee. And she also tells me that her home is the Catholic Church, and always will be. You see, I was the one who was the most excited about baptizing ourselves into the LDS church. And now I’m the one most excited to leave it behind.

Well now, if your wife declares that the Catholic Church is her home…heart is where the home is, I pray you come back soon…

But work on greater understanding and devotion to the Eucharist.
