Hi everybody
I used to teach CCD in our parish in Las Vegas, and I loved it. We used the Sadlier books, awesome…anyway.
We moved back to Berlin, germany about 4 months ago, and I was quite thrilled to get my kids into the religious education system, which is taught in the schools here. The Diocese is broke, they can’t afford to offer parish based CCD, besides, it’S never been a part of German culture to have Sunday School anyway. Now, I went to a parent information evening last night. Allegedly ( well, 90 % sure ), the government ( consisting of Social Democrats, Socialist party and Green Party ) want to introduce an " ethics " class, obligatory to all students, starting next year in grade level 7, then eventually spreading all the way into elementary throughout high school. Religious education will still be available, but OUTSIDE of school hours only, as an extra class and VOLUNTARY only. We’re talking teenagers who could then leave school early or come late. i’m asking myself, how dare these politicians impose an " ethics " class ( which is supposed to teach a mingled version of " how do Catholics, Protestants, Jewish people, Muslims, Hindus etc practice their faith " and philosophy ) which has to be taken and basically deny my child her right to religious education because of transportation problems, etc. I know, I’m the first and foremost teacher to my child’S faith, I just think it’S wrong to let the Atheist forum dictate our curriculum. If I were in the States, I’S get a good lawyer right about now, but the legal system works a little different here. Should I contact the Diocese to see if they have petitions going on orwhat? Any ideas?
Thanks, God bless
