Well, back in the Lion’s den.

I’m discussing the Eucharist on a thread entitled: “Eucharist: RCC heresy?” and I thought I’d ask for some (name removed by moderator)ut here.

The argument I’m addressing is that Mark 7:18-19, where Jesus is addressing the Pharisees’ complaints that the Apostles were not washing before eating, is “proof” that nothing eaten will save you.

Yes, I know that the context is that nothing eaten will defile you. But that doesn’t seem to be a satisfactory argument. Any suggestions?

That’s not what it means at all – The only purity that matters is moral (i.e., interior) integrity, which is illustrated by a rather earthy image of digestion. Interior impurity is illustrated by a traditional list of vices that flow from the human heart (%between% cf. Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Tim. 1:9-10; Col. 3:5-8; 1 Cor. 5:10-11). %between%

It looks as if someone is turning the Scripture inside out trying to find something to refute belief in the Eucharist.

To begin with, Scripture is not a series of statements collected together but often having no interconnection. It is one whole piece, and if it is from God, and God’s truth, then it cannot be self contradictory.

Therefore, a one line statement needs to be seen in the light of the whole of Scripture - including John, especially Chapter 6, and the Eucharistic scenes in the Synoptics, and Hebrews, and Paul, particularly when he speaks of bringing condemnation on oneself by receiving unworthly.

Don’t get caught up in a line by line game; step back, and help them to step back, and see the whole picture instead of one part of one brush stroke.

Protestants have a nack for tring to tell God what He *really *meant.
