Dear friends

I am thinking about asking my Priest if it is possible to commence at least once a week for the entire day if not everyday of the week, Eucharistic Adoration.

I don’t want to go and ask my Priest without having a realistic plan for him as he is extremely busy and I would not want to have to place further burden on him so I would welcome any help, information, suggestions or tips for putting together a programme so that this may be a real possibility.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

I’ve never been involved with how a parish organizes Adoration . . . perpetual or otherwise. But from talking with those who have, it seems the biggest issue to be tackled has to do with making sure scheduled Adorers show up and don’t leave the Blessed Sacrament alone. I’m sure there are some here who can speak to this and other issues more directly.

On a seperate note, I saw something today at Adoration that I’ve never seen before. Instead of using a monstrance, this parish had a kind of tabernacle I’ve never seen. The door of the tabernacle was open, exposing the Blessed Sacrament in a kind of “panel.” Think of it like a book . . . the door of the tabernacle is the cover of the book, the “panel” with the Blessed Sacrament is the first page.

I assume this is legit . . . and maybe this is one of the ways this parish deals with the issue of leaving the Blessed Sacrament unattended. If one had to leave, I assume it would be proper to simply close the door of the tabernacle. Obviously, this wouldn’t be the first choice though.

All day for every day of the week- or even one day a week may be hard to do, if the parish is small, or there isn’t the Eucharistic devotion there that there should be. It would not be unreasonable to ask the priest for a few hours (maybe just one hour, at first- to see how that works) of adoration one day a week. Also, see if there are others in your parish who feel the same way- the priest isn’t likely to schedule something regularly like that for just one or two people, because those one or two people may not make it every single time.

Dear Dave

Thank you very much for your reply. The Parish I attend is a very large Parish. We currently have one afternoon a month of Eucharistic Adoration, this one afternoon is limited in the way that I cannot always make that one afternoon a month and I am sure it is the same for alot of other people, not only that, but most people work or have other duties in the day that they cannot attend Adoration during the day. It is poorly attended and usually after the first half an hour there is one or two people left in Adoration for the rest of the afternoon.

There is little talk of Eucharistic Adoration and so far it is not really encouraged, neither are Third Orders encouraged.

It is very problematic to keep constant Eucharistic Adoration for any extended period of time and it is a real worry about keeping someone there constantly in all events. The Monstrance you mention would solve to some extent the security of the Eucharist but not the security of the Church. I am compelled to rather err on the side of security for ‘all’ of the Church. Our Church has been vanadalised in the past, that is not a risk worth taking by having the Church vunerable in that way.

If you have any thoughts or advice on how to encourage Eucharistic Adoration I would be very grateful for anything you can advise me on.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Dear friend

Thank you very much for your reply.

I’d agree with you that it is very problematic to organise Eucharistic Adoration.

I think it is, as you say, more realistic to have a daily, one hour Eucharistic Adoration and see how that develops. I think that would be possible and from those who did attend for that one hour it may be possible to find out exactly who attending, when and how and increase Adoration to the demand for it.

If you have any further advice I would be very grateful

Our parish has adoration one day a week for about 8 hours. It is not enough but at least it is something. You technically only need one person present at one time, so if you were doing it for 8 hours, you would only need 8 people to commit for 1 hour. I would think that is very possible in the size of parish you mentioned. Sometimes when I go to adoration there might only be the “assigned” person, and other times there are more. I can’t sign up for an hour as I work during the day but I try to make it when I can.

Maybe you could line up 8 people committed to one hour, and take that plan to your pastor and go from there.

Peace

This has been working at my parish for about a year now. For thirty minutes after daily Mass, we have Adoration followed by Benediciton.

This would be a good way to get it started and doesn’t put too much of an immediate burden on the priest or the adorers.

there are many parishes who have gone before you to establish Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration and it is an amazing process! Our chapel has been open for 4 years and the blessings are incredible!

Please check into the Real Presence Association - and read their online guidebook for starting Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration - step by step.

there is also a nice site with resources online from an adoration workshop that was held in our diocese sometime ago

The key is to find like minded people to get together and PRAY PRAY PRAY for the graces that this will happen. Ask Our Lady to help you. Be patient and wait for the Lord’s timing.

My huge parish (almost 7,000 families) had trouble getting people to fill the times when we had adoration from about 7am to 10pm on weekdays only for years. Last year with our pastor’s support, we invited a priest who goes across the country preaching about PEA to parishes. The priest had cards asking people to put down when they could do one hour per week. Only men or couples are allowed overnight by our pastor’s preference for safety. We also have a keypad lock on the door of a special small chapel just for this purpose. (Our regular large chapel has too many other activities like weddings and funerals that used to disrupt adoration.) On 5-28-05 we began PEA and had over 1500 volunteers when we could not find less than 100 before.

Pray, pray, pray and go for it!
